As a die-hard fan of the Fallout series, I find the approach these talented actors took to be truly inspiring. Their willingness to dive headfirst into the unknown, trusting that the creative minds behind the show would guide them through the post-apocalyptic wasteland, is nothing short of remarkable.
When Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Moisés Arias joined Jonathan Nolan’s “Fallout” TV series on Amazon Prime Video, they weren’t sure about the direction the adaptation of the well-known Bethesda Game Studios franchise would take. However, that was perfectly okay for them after reading the early scripts, which unveiled the post-apocalyptic setting where their characters, Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, Lucy, Maximus, and Norm, were struggling to survive.
Initially, we had two episodes scripted before we fully grasped the tone. After that, the scripts seemed to trickle out gradually,” Goggins explained at a recent event organized by EbMaster.
In fact, Goggins said the finale script wasn’t delivered until a few days before filming.
Before attempting to audition for ‘Fallout’, actress Purnell attended a preparatory meeting with creators Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet to understand their intended feel for the series. However, once that was done, she mainly relied on the process to guide where the story would go.
Purnell stated that before receiving the script or any details, they wanted to have a meeting to discuss the tone of the project. He’s grateful they did as he feels he might not have landed the role or portrayed it correctly if they hadn’t during their initial encounter described it as ‘Ned Flanders in the apocalypse.’ This description hooked him immediately, and when he read the script, it significantly altered how he imagined her voice.
Moten was offered the chance to get more info and actually turned it down.
He said, ‘They shared some information with me, but I responded, “Please hold off!”‘ He continued, “Being in television work requires a certain level of flexibility. To put it simply, even Aaron himself doesn’t always know his plans for the next day, and the same goes for the character. It’s essential to adapt and go with the flow, especially when dealing with such a large-scale project. The fast pace at which we work makes it necessary to ‘hang on’ as we navigate through it.
