Almost thirty years ago, Nicolas Cage appeared in the hugely popular sci-fi movie Face/Off with John Travolta. Now, you can watch it for free starting next month.
Starting November 1st, you can watch Face/Off for free on Tubi, which features ads. This 1997 action movie, directed by John Woo, stars John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer. Archer successfully captures the man who killed his son, Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage). However, when Archer learns about a bomb threat in Los Angeles, he undergoes a risky surgery to switch faces with Troy, allowing him to go undercover in prison. Meanwhile, the real Troy wakes up wearing Archer’s face and begins to infiltrate his life.
Released in 1997 with a budget of $80 million, Face/Off was a major success. It received highly positive reviews, earning a 93% score from critics and an 82% audience score based on over 250,000 ratings. Fans of the sci-fi action film have long hoped for a sequel, but one hasn’t been made yet.
A Face/Off Sequel is Stuck in Development
Paramount initially planned a remake of Face/Off in 2019, but later switched to creating a direct sequel. Announced in 2023, the sequel will follow the children of the characters played by John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Adam Wingard, known for his work on the MonsterVerse films, signed on to direct in 2021. However, in March 2024, Wingard revealed the project was paused due to the 2023 writers’ strike and was no longer actively being developed, though he remained optimistic about its future.
In 2025, John Travolta and Gina Gershon worked together again on the action movie High Rollers, after previously starring in Face/Off. While promoting High Rollers, Gershon expressed her enthusiasm for another Face/Off film, saying Travolta was just as enjoyable and professional to work with as he was on their first movie. Despite her character, Sasha Hassler, appearing to die in Face/Off, Gershon would be thrilled to reprise the role in a sequel. She told Us Weekly she’d join in a heartbeat, especially if it meant reuniting with Travolta, director John Woo, and co-star Joan Allen (who played Eve Archer).
Face/Off will hit Tubi on Nov. 1.
