I just read that the FAA is trying something really interesting – they’re reaching out to gamers to become air traffic controllers! Apparently, they’re seriously short-staffed across the country, and they think gamers have the skills they need. It’s a cool idea, honestly!
The agency is starting a new recruiting drive targeting video game players, featuring a dynamic YouTube ad that emphasizes high earning potential – salaries exceeding $100,000. This initiative is part of a larger effort to address thousands of unfilled positions at the FAA, which officials say are affecting the safety of air travel.
You know, I’ve been hearing a lot lately about how gamers actually have skills that are super valuable in the workplace. Apparently, because we’re always reacting fast in games, processing tons of info, and staying focused for hours, we’re naturally good at handling pressure and making quick decisions – which is exactly what a lot of jobs need! It makes sense when you think about it, right?
In a statement to The New York Times, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy explained that to attract new air traffic controllers, they need to update their recruitment strategies. He believes focusing on gamers is a good approach, as this group of young adults already possesses many of the skills needed to excel in the profession.
FAA turns to gamers as staffing shortage continues
The FAA is actively hiring more air traffic controllers because they currently don’t have enough. While they have over 11,000 fully trained controllers across the country as of early 2026, this is still thousands fewer than the 14,663 needed to be fully staffed.
The Federal Aviation Administration has made progress in hiring and training air traffic controllers recently. Since September 2024, they’ve added around 300 certified controllers and significantly shortened the training period – from 13 months down to about six and a half. They’ve also seen better results from training, with fewer trainees failing – the failure rate has dropped from around 33% to about 25%.
Although things are improving, the agency notes that more staff are still needed. Retirements, the time it takes to train new employees, and people leaving the workforce are all continuing to hinder efforts to increase staffing levels.
Some companies are trying to speed up hiring by specifically looking for people who play video games. The Federal Aviation Administration notes that many air traffic controllers already have experience with gaming, and recent surveys show almost all new controllers who completed training identified as gamers.

Michael O’Donnell, an aviation consultant, believes that while gaming experience can be helpful, it’s not a substitute for important qualities like skill and knowledge.
Someone with gaming experience, especially in simulations like air traffic control, often has a head start, bringing useful skills to the job. However, those skills aren’t a substitute for natural ability, self-discipline, or the ability to make good decisions quickly under stress.
I’m really seeing a smart move from the agency here! They’re focusing on reaching gamers directly instead of just hitting up college fairs like they used to. Apparently, only about 25% of the people in leadership positions actually have a traditional four-year college degree, so it makes total sense to look for talent where they are – and a lot of that talent is definitely in the gaming world!
The FAA will begin accepting applications on April 17th, but there’s a limit of 8,000. They anticipate reaching that limit very quickly, likely within just a few days.
