Explaining Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Ending

Similar to previous chapters, Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 has a detailed ending with a cliffhanger. To fully understand what happens – and to start thinking about what it means for the next chapter – you’ll need to pay close attention to several important details throughout the game.

To understand how the story ends, let’s look closely at Lily’s dollhouse and what happens there. Even though you can still play after this point, several key events occur that will definitely play a role in Chapter 6.

Time for a Tea Party

Lily Lovebraids’ Importance to the Chapter

Near the end of Chapter 5, you’re kidnapped by Lily and forced to assist with her tea party. This is where you find Kissy Missy and Poppy, who are also Lily’s captives. While there, you discover notes detailing Experiment 1468 – a subject with hair that Lily can control as if it were an extension of her own body. These notes are dated August 6, 1995, just two days before the infamous Hour of Joy.

Lily was scheduled for surgery on August 20, 1995. After meeting her, you can deduce that the Prototype continued performing operations like hers following the Hour of Joy. This is supported by a video showing Ms. Gracie hiding during the Hour of Joy, being taken away by the toys who assure her they won’t hurt her. Later, you discover a tape proving Ms. Gracie is now Lily, but she has no memory of her past life.

Considering Poppy knew about and saw the Hour of Joy, and was placed in her case believing the orphans still lived, it’s probable the Prototype did similar things to them. The fact you’ve been learning about the orphans throughout the story suggests Lily’s part might show the Prototype continued its operations. Also, the presence of old employees could be key to how different groups of toys form, and this might become important in Chapter 6.

The Huggy Reunion

Huggy Wuggy and Kissy Missy Reunite

After escaping Lily and finding Kissy Missy near the train, you’re suddenly confronted by Huggy Wuggy. Luckily, Kissy Missy intervenes, calming Huggy down and offering him her hand. However, the Prototype then attacks both Huggy and Kissy Missy, leaving their survival uncertain and suggesting they may have been killed.

Suddenly, you’re running from something on the train, and it looks like the Prototype throws you into a pool of Poppy Gel – though it’s unclear exactly what happens. You might have been affected by the red smoke nearby. You wake up with Giblet checking on you, relieved to see you’re okay. He doesn’t know where Kissy is, but he confirms that the Prototype finally has the Poppy, which is what it was after all along.

The Backup

You Finally Find the Backup in the Server Room

With only Giblet to guide you, he’ll take you to where the backup he mentioned is stored. This backup contains crucial information about the Negation Formula – the one you discovered in a note – and it’s the key to finally defeating the Prototype. However, the backup isn’t what you expect: it’s another version of the Doctor, Harley Sawyer, who ran the experiments at Playtime Co. You shut him down before, but it seems a copy of his mind was saved as a backup.

The chapter concludes with the Doctor noting the surprising developments. As we move into Chapter 6, the central question is whether he’ll choose to help you, despite having no apparent reason to and understandably feeling resentful about the damage to his system. However, given the intricate backstory of Poppy Playtime, it’s also possible the Doctor might want to eliminate the Prototype, though his motives remain a mystery.

The Doctor might try to bargain with you – offering his assistance if you either help him escape the factory or let him take control of it. As you head into Chapter 6 of Poppy Playtime, Giblet is your only confirmed ally, and the Doctor might help, making your situation look pretty desperate.
