
YouTube Shorts are now bringing in more money from ads than regular videos. This means you might see your favorite creators posting shorter clips more often instead of longer videos.
In 2021, YouTube introduced Shorts – its version of TikTok – allowing users to create and share short videos.
After a few years of growth, short-form videos, known as Shorts, are now generating more ad revenue for YouTube than traditional long-form videos, as of the third quarter of 2025.
YouTube’s advertising revenue rose by 15%, reaching $10.3 billion, according to the video platform.
During Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings call in 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Shorts is performing very well. He stated that in the U.S., Shorts are now generating more revenue for each hour watched compared to traditional YouTube videos.

YouTube Shorts overthrows traditional videos as platform makes $10.3B
The popularity of YouTube Shorts might worry viewers who prefer watching longer, more in-depth videos instead of quick clips.
In early 2025, a lot of people online shared their frustration with YouTube Shorts, saying they’d prefer it as a standalone app instead of being part of YouTube.
YouTube addressed the recent feedback, saying they value everyone’s honest opinions and have passed that information on to their product development teams.
YouTube probably won’t limit the number of Shorts it shows, particularly because Shorts are currently very profitable for them.

In June, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that Shorts videos were now averaging over 200 billion views daily, surpassing TikTok in popularity.
Short-form videos have also been a huge success for MrBeast, the world’s most popular YouTuber. In September, it was announced that his Shorts were being watched more often than his regular, longer videos.
One of his short videos became the most-viewed in a single day, racking up an incredible 68 million views.
