Matthew McConaughey recently joined the growing number of celebrities embracing artificial intelligence. He’s partnered with AI company ElvenLabs, giving them permission to use his voice. He’s also voicing a character in the new sci-fi game, Exodus, developed by Archetype Entertainment. Because of the timing of the ElvenLabs deal, Archetype co-founder Chad Robertson wants to assure fans that McConaughey is genuinely recording lines for the game himself.
According to Robertson, all the voice work in Exodus was custom-made for the game. The voice actor also has a separate agreement with Elevenlabs, a leading AI voice generation company used by other game developers. This allows others to use his voice in ways that aren’t custom recordings, but he has very specific rules about how it can be done.
Robertson explained that Archetype isn’t currently using AI to create its game, but they’re open to considering it later if the situation is right.
As a gamer, I’m always curious about how studios are thinking about AI. From what I understand, the team wants to focus on being innovative and making awesome games, first and foremost. They’re keeping an open mind about using AI tools if they can help with costs or improve the quality of the game, but right now, they don’t have any concrete plans to start using it. They’re basically saying they’ll be smart about it and see how things develop before jumping in.
Exodus was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2023. The game puts players in the role of The Traveler, who undertakes risky space missions to acquire technology and weapons from an alien species known as the Celestials. Matthew McConaughey will voice the character C.C. Orlev, though details about his specific part in the game are currently being kept secret.
I was really blown away by the last Exodus trailer – it showed off some seriously creepy Celestials that the Traveler is going to face! What’s also super interesting is how the game messes with time. Apparently, things can happen over days or hours for the Traveler while years are going by back on Earth. It reminds me a lot of the movie Interstellar with Matthew McConaughey, where time worked all weird depending on where you were. It’s a cool idea and I can’t wait to see how it plays out in the game!
Exodus is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but it doesn’t currently have a release date.
