As a seasoned industry veteran, I wholeheartedly agree with Kathleen Finch’s perspective. Her insightful advice to stop using the outdated term “cable” and focus on creating content is a breath of fresh air. The way we consume media has evolved dramatically over the years, and it’s about time our mindset follows suit.
Kathleen Finch, who heads U.S. networks at Warner Bros. Discovery, offered a suggestion to her fellow professionals in the industry as she prepares to retire this month: “It’s time to abandon the term ‘cable.’
Finch stated during his talk at Content London, “Our focus is on creating content. Where that content is accessed depends on where the audience decides to seek it out.
In August, it was made public that Finch would be retiring at the year’s end and will be succeeded by Channing Dungey, who is the chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television group. Prior to the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery in April 2022, Finch managed Discovery’s 12 lifestyle brands such as HGTV, TLC, and Food Network. Following this merger, Finch took charge of most U.S. networks including TBS, TNT, TruTV, and Cartoon Network/Adult Swim.
She encouraged others in the linear business to “stop limiting ourselves to, ‘I’m a cable exec, I work in cable, I’m making cable content.’ That’s going away at some point, right? So what we all are is creatives. You make content, and then you put it on all these different places and the audience chooses to watch it whichever place they happen to prefer.”
Finch describes herself as a creative person rather than a cable executive. “What we produce is the focus,” she explained, “where it’s distributed is largely beyond our control.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge that no one surpasses Kathleen when it comes to crafting engaging content, attracting exceptional talent, and shaping significant lifestyle brands. Working alongside her as we constructed our top-tier entertainment networks at Discovery and established Warner Bros. Discovery as a dominant force in unscripted programming, I can attest to her brilliance.
