Ex-Twitch exec slams Amazon for cutting 14K jobs in AI shift: ‘Robots don’t give a f**k’

Twitch is undergoing another round of layoffs because its owner, Amazon, is cutting tens of thousands of corporate positions. This is happening as Amazon shifts its focus towards artificial intelligence.

Amazon has announced it will be cutting around 14,000 jobs from its corporate staff this year – about 4% of its office workers – as the company works to reduce costs and reorganize. Reports suggest these cuts could potentially reach 30,000, with layoffs starting on October 28th.

This change is a key part of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s plan to simplify how the company works and focus more on artificial intelligence and automation. Jassy has stated that AI will be used to automate many everyday tasks, which could eliminate the need for some jobs.

According to eMarketer analyst Sky Canaves, Amazon’s recent actions suggest the company is becoming more efficient thanks to artificial intelligence, allowing them to potentially lay off a significant number of employees, as reported by Techloy.

Twitch hit with mass layoffs as Amazon cuts 14,000 employees

Recent layoffs at Amazon have impacted key areas like Amazon Web Services, Prime Video, and Twitch. This is especially difficult for Twitch, which already cut its staff by 35% – or 500 employees – earlier this year.

A longtime Twitch employee named Tarfu, who worked there for 11 years and was instrumental in creating the platform’s fraud prevention system, has announced they are leaving the company.

I created and ran Twitch’s entire system for preventing fraud. I was responsible for blocking people who tried to steal money or abuse the platform’s revenue system. It seems I was successful, which is why I was laid off, according to a recent social media post.

So, after an amazing 9 years, my time at Twitch is over. I was part of the layoffs happening at Amazon today. Honestly, it was the best job I’ve ever had. I’ve learned a ton, met some incredible people – both creators and coworkers – and I always looked forward to TwitchCon every year. I’ve updated my resume and I’m now looking for new opportunities, so hit me up if you think I’d be a good fit for anything!

So, I just found out I was laid off from my job as an Influencer Marketing Manager – it’s a tough break after nine years! Honestly, it was the best job I’ve ever had, and I’m really going to miss it.

Ex-Twitch boss blasts Amazon for replacing jobs with AI

Marcus Graham, a former Twitch executive known as ‘djWHEAT,’ strongly criticized the recent layoffs, arguing that substituting seasoned staff with AI or less dedicated employees will negatively impact content creators.

Graham expressed concern that after 11 years of advocating for Twitch creators, viewers, and moderators, his role has ended. He fears the platform will now be managed by someone – or something, like an automated system – that won’t prioritize the community’s needs, which he believes will be detrimental to everyone involved.

Twitch is currently popular, but it’s facing issues because it keeps letting go of dedicated and passionate employees – people who consistently went above and beyond. This is just the latest example of that trend. While many caring individuals still work at Twitch, that number is decreasing.

People are saying the changes at Twitch are good because the previous team wasn’t great, but that’s not the full story. Tarfu genuinely cared about creators, viewers, and moderators for over a decade, and he consistently fought for them. Now, decisions will likely be made by someone or something that doesn’t have that same level of dedication, which is a negative outcome for everyone involved.

In 2014, Amazon bought Twitch for almost $1 billion. However, recent reports showed the platform was losing money even though it generated $2 billion in revenue each year, leading some within the company to fear Amazon might consider it a failing project.

Earlier this month, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy spoke positively about Amazon’s backing of the platform, describing the company as very helpful. He hasn’t yet commented publicly on the recent layoffs.
