In a detailed conversation after his departure from PlayStation on January 15, Shuhei Yoshida, who had spent 31 years with the company, shared insights about his career. One of the key points discussed was his perspective on Sony’s recent foray into the live-service market, an area that has seen a mix of successes and challenges so far. During the conversation with Kinda Funny, he expressed that if he were still in charge, he would have attempted to oppose this move towards live-services before Hermen Hulst took over.
He mentioned that Sony allocated significantly more funds to PlayStation following Hulst’s takeover, intending to support not only single-player games but also new live-service initiatives.
Speaking as a passionate fan, I shared my enthusiasm for these fantastic games, emphasizing the need to continue this work, and suggesting that they might consider providing extra resources for us to further develop our live-service titles. I acknowledged the risky nature of transitioning into the live-service market, but also highlighted that success in this competitive landscape would be a long shot, as per Yoshida’s words (reported by IGN).
The firm recognized the risk and granted Hermen the necessary tools and opportunity to attempt it. To me, that seems like their approach, and I’m glad they did. In my opinion, that’s fantastic, and I hope some of their games will be successful. He also mentioned that no one anticipated Helldivers 2 would achieve the success it did.
He expressed that it’s impossible to predict success in this field, but that’s what makes it exciting. He hopes his approach ultimately proves effective.
Ultimately, Yoshida expressed that, as the head of PlayStation Studios, he likely would have resisted the trend towards live-services. Laughingly, he speculated, “Perhaps that’s one of the factors they replaced me with someone else in first-party development!
In recent years, Helldivers 2 has been Sony’s most successful live-service title with over 12 million copies sold. Despite reducing the number of live-service projects they produce by half, Sony continues to work on several notable upcoming releases. These include Fairgame$ and rumors suggest a new multiplayer game in the Horizon series.
In recent times, some ongoing live-service initiatives by Sony have been scrapped, with titles such as a new God of War game and The Last of Us Online being among those affected.
In his conversation with Kinda Funny, Yoshida touched upon reasons behind the absence of a Bloodborne remaster, the factors contributing to the downfall of PlayStation Vita, and expressed surprise at the lower sales figures for Horizon Forbidden West in contrast to the initial game.
