Ex-Linus Tech Tips employee reveals he quit over pay and work expectations

A former Linus Media Group employee recently published a detailed video explaining his departure after almost ten years with the company. He said his decision was due to a combination of factors, including pay that hadn’t kept pace with the rising cost of living, changing expectations at work, and increasing frustration with project and team management.

Jake Tivy, a former employee, announced his resignation on August 6, 2025. He had worked at the Vancouver company responsible for popular channels like Linus Tech Tips, Short Circuit, and Techquickie for nearly half of his life.

I was really fascinated watching Tivy talk about his career journey! He started with physical jobs like warehouse work, then moved into IT, and eventually started writing. He actually ended up leading the entire writing team at LTT, and also handled all the logistics as the company grew from a small group of around 10 people to over 100! It’s amazing to see how far he’s come.

Pay concerns and shifting work expectations

In the video, Jake explained that he decided to leave because he felt underappreciated, especially when it came to his compensation.

He explained that after more than three years with no real increase in pay, and as the cost of living – particularly in expensive cities like Vancouver – continued to rise, he began to question whether he’d ever be able to afford a home, especially while helping his boss purchase a third property.

He started tracking how much money his videos were making and then began looking for jobs in IT infrastructure. The video revealed that Linus Media Group wouldn’t meet his salary request, so he decided to leave the company.

He explained that the job market is highly competitive, and the company was justified in denying the request.

Tivy explained that factors beyond just his salary contributed to his departure. He felt increasingly detached from his work because projects were often assigned to others mid-way through, leaving him disconnected from the final result.

He explained that the company had changed significantly from what originally attracted him. This shift included losing valued colleagues, becoming more focused on corporate processes as the team grew, and navigating several major issues. Over time, the work environment had become almost unrecognizable from what he initially expected.

He stated that he and his colleagues had voiced their worries to company leaders for months before he left, and they even provided a list of suggested improvements.

He wasn’t alone in feeling this way. While he acknowledged some of his concerns were addressed, it wasn’t enough to change his mind about leaving.

I was really affected by that Linus Tech Tips video they did about the company’s finances. It showed clips of former employees talking, and they went over things like average salaries and how the company uses its money. Honestly, it hit me pretty hard.

He was upset by the decision to include himself and others without asking them first, especially because he’d been unhappy with the company’s pay practices for some time.

He explained that the comment felt like a disguised insult and genuinely bothered him. He later apologized to the audience for sharing his immediate reaction, saying he should have paused and thought things through before responding.

Even though he received some criticism, Tivy expressed gratitude for his time with the company and the experiences he had there. He highlighted significant projects, including a Guinness World Record attempt and work with various creators, as being particularly important to his career.

He said leaving LMG was the most difficult decision of his career, and he expressed hope that things would continue to get better for the people who work there now and in the future.

So, I wrapped up my video by saying that stepping away was the best decision I could’ve made. Now I’m totally focused on creating my own stuff – building projects and making the content I want to make.

So, he just announced he’s done with LMG, which is a little sad, but he’s really excited about what’s next! It feels like he’s closing one door and opening another, and I’m definitely curious to see what he does next.
