Ex-Blizzard President Blasts Marvel Rivals as Overwatch Clone, Faces Backlash for 'Ridiculous' Claim

As a long-time fan and connoisseur of video games, I’ve seen my fair share of comparisons and debates in the gaming world. However, the ongoing debate between Marvel Rivals and Overwatch has been particularly intriguing to me. While it’s undeniable that Overwatch served as an inspiration for Marvel Rivals, the former NetEase title stands out on its own merits.

After NetEase Games unveiled Marvel Rivals, a multiplayer shooter featuring superhero teams, it has attracted a mix of positive feedback, comparisons, and opinions that vary greatly within the gaming community. One major point of discussion was its unique position in the market, especially when compared to Overwatch, before the game’s alpha and beta phases were launched.

The game is set to debut this Friday, but it seems the comparisons to Overwatch were perhaps overstated. In truth, the developers found inspiration in Overwatch, not necessarily created a carbon copy. However, former Blizzard President Mike Ybarra didn’t share this viewpoint. Yesterday night, he expressed his criticism of the new NetEase game on what used to be Twitter.

Indeed, it seemed that Ybarra implied Marvel Rivals might be just a replica of Overwatch, and interestingly, he jokingly pointed out Black Widow as an analog to the well-known Overwatch persona, Widowmaker.

It seems that Overwatch Marvel Rivals is due to ship tomorrow, which brings to mind Light of Motiram, a game that appears to be heavily influenced by Horizon Zero Dawn and hails from China. The character names even share a resemblance – Widowmaker in Overwatch versus Black Widow in Marvel Rivals. It’s almost as if NetEase and Tencent are operating under the same umbrella.

It’s undeniable that Overwatch influenced Marvel Rivals in several ways, particularly in its character design. Yet, there are numerous distinctions that set Marvel Rivals apart as a strong rival to Overwatch 2. Other games like Valorant, Paladins, and the now-canceled Concord have also borrowed ideas from Overwatch. Nevertheless, Ybarra’s statement seems to have stirred some feelings among Marvel Rivals fans.

Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Tales of Suspense #52 (1964), making her association with the Black Widow name a 60-year-old one. This fact was often mentioned by commenters in response to Ybarra’s post. Moreover, in Marvel Comics, Black Widow is known for her extensive knowledge and proficiency with various weapons, such as a sniper rifle, although she rarely uses it. This expertise served as the primary inspiration for the character model and combat gear in Rivals.

Given the distinct characteristics that set Overwatch’s Widowmaker apart from Marvel Rivals’ Black Widow, it was hard for players not to find humor in Ybarra’s seemingly exaggerated opinion.

One Twitter user commented that Rivals’ release “will be good for Blizzard to have real competitors in their space,” adding that this “pressure of losing players will force them to raise their standards,” which is a reasonably good (and healthy) statement.

A different Twitter user observed that the characters in Rivals have a richer and multi-dimensional development compared to those in Overwatch. Furthermore, they noted that each character’s skills in Rivals align more closely with their portrayals in comic books. However, they found it peculiar to make such a statement.

More recently, the developer shared details about their Monetization strategy, garnering numerous compliments from gamers. Notably, one comment highlights this point, considering Overwatch’s history with predatory microtransactions, which attracted significant backlash from its player base.

The comparisons and debate on Marvel Rivals and Overwatch’s similarity will no doubt continue to rumble on amongst players following Rivals release this Friday. For now though, Marvel Rivals looks to provide healthy competition in a space dominated by Blizzard’s hero shooter for quite a number of years.
