Everything We Know About the Horrific Creatures in ‘A Quiet Place’

Released in 2018, A Quiet Place was a huge success, earning over $340 million around the world. The film, starring and directed by John Krasinski, established him as a promising new director. He then directed the sequel, A Quiet Place Part II. Michael Sarnoski directed the third installment, the prequel A Quiet Place: Day One. Krasinski is set to return to direct a fourth film, A Quiet Place Part III, currently planned for release in July 2027.

John Krasinski’s consistent involvement as director, writer, and actor has been key to creating a unified feel and consistent rules for the monsters in the A Quiet Place films. Each movie reveals more about these sound-sensitive creatures. Understanding the full story requires looking at the franchise as a whole. Here’s a breakdown of everything we know about the creatures from A Quiet Place.

What Are the Creatures From ‘A Quiet Place’ and Where Did They Come From?

Paramount Pictures

Before the movie A Quiet Place came out, a lot of information about the monsters was shared, and John Krasinski, the director and star, was a key source of details. He specifically explained in a 2018 Empire podcast that the creatures are actually aliens.

These beings are truly otherworldly, originating from another planet. When I envisioned them, I drew inspiration from many alien films, which often focus on invasions and hidden motives. I wanted to create a thinking, predatory alien – something that acts like a parasite introduced into a new environment.

From the beginning, Krasinski had a general idea of what the creatures were in the A Quiet Place series, but the movie Day One revealed more about where they came from. We find out their home planet was destroyed, and they survived by traveling to Earth on meteors – a truly frightening take on an alien invasion.

These creatures don’t have an official name, but fans have started calling them ‘Death Angels’ because of their pale skin and head shapes that resemble wings. The name has become popular, and most people now use ‘Death Angel’ when talking about them.

What Are the Death Angel’s Special Abilities, and What Are Their Weaknesses?

Paramount Pictures

Perhaps the most terrifying aspect of the Death Angels is their ability to locate prey using sound. This heightened sense is central to many of the franchise’s scariest scenes, constantly leaving survivors on edge and forcing them to avoid even the smallest noise. However, their hearing is even more complex than it appears.

Here is every character trait that the Death Angels have that makes them such terrifying hunters:

  • Super Hearing & Audio Tracking: The creatures’ hearing is phenomenal, allowing them to track their victims from afar. More essential to their ability to hunt, they use sound to map out their surroundings and avoid obstacles.
  • Physical Strength & Agility: Death Angels are robust and agile creatures. Their speed makes them nearly impossible to outrun, their strength allows them to rip through obstacles, and they can climb most surfaces with ease.
  • Biological Traits: The creatures have tough exoskeletons that make them bulletproof. Day One reveals that some survive meteor impacts and reentry, and that they come in different sizes and strengths.
  • Behavioral Traits: Death Angels are relentless hunters that never seem to grow fatigued. Multiple creatures hunt together when focusing on the same sound.

As a huge fan of creature features, I’ve become fascinated with the Death Angels. They’re terrifyingly powerful – most people who cross paths with one don’t survive – but they’re not unbeatable. It turns out sound is a huge factor when it comes to dealing with them. We first saw in A Quiet Place Part II that high-pitched noises can really mess them up, even drive them away, and loud noises can actually be used to lead them into traps. They’re incredibly tough, but there’s a chink in their armor – if you can get their head plates to open, there’s a vulnerable spot underneath. And interestingly, Day One revealed they can’t swim at all, so water is a surprisingly effective weapon against them!

The story of the alien invaders is expected to expand, potentially with an international series and a new Chapter III. However, even though there are methods to overcome the Death Angels and more details to uncover, it’s still safest to avoid them altogether.

How to Avoid the Death Angels in ‘A Quiet Place’

Paramount Pictures

In the movie A Quiet Place, staying quiet is crucial for survival, so characters constantly find ways to avoid making noise. They try to walk without shoes and make sure safe spaces block out sound, because even a creaky floor or door could be deadly. Instead of speaking, they communicate using sign language.

Although staying quiet is crucial for survival, using sound cleverly can also be a lifesaver. Sound can confuse creatures, and even in the first movie, natural noises help cover up sounds made by people. For example, a waterfall provides a way to escape because its constant roar hides movement. It’s not revealed until later, in Day One, but waterfalls also offer a degree of safety, as the creatures can’t swim.

These creatures seem scarier at night, but they don’t actually hunt more often then. They’re constantly on the prowl, day or night, and never give up. It’s best to stay away from open areas because sound carries easily, making it hard to hide or get away once they’ve seen you.
