The first season of the HBO series was very popular, drawing viewers in each week with its setting in 1962 Derry. The show explored the backstory of the terrifying creature ‘It,’ with Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Season 1 expanded the world of ‘It,’ and the creators have promised even more for fans in the future.

HBO hasn’t officially confirmed a second season of Welcome to Derry, but it’s definitely happening. Seasons 2 and 3 will serve as prequels to the IT movies from 2017 and 2019, delving deeper into the town’s frightening past. The show won’t be based on a specific Stephen King story, but it will expand on the world established in his 1986 novel, filling in missing pieces of the history.

What Happened in It: Welcome to Derry Season 1?

The story begins in 1962, 27 years before the events of the 2017 series, with a shocking opening episode. We meet a group of young kids who are meant to be the predecessors to the Losers’ Club. However, by the end of the first episode, all but two – Lilly Bainbridge and Ronnie Grogan – are killed by It, which appears as a terrifying, mutated baby. This leads to Ronnie’s father, Hank, being wrongly accused of the murders, and further inflames racial tensions in an already troubled community.

US Air Force Major Leroy Hanlon is assigned to the Derry military base, and his family – wife Charlotte and 12-year-old son Will – move there with him. Will eventually becomes the father of Mike Hanlon, one of the members of the Losers’ Club. Viewers are first introduced to an adult Mike in the 2017 film, living on the farm he inherited after his parents passed away.

Leroy Hanlon meets Airman 1st Class Dick Hallorann, who is working on a highly classified mission at the base. The mission’s true purpose is eventually revealed: to capture an ancient being and use it to control people. Hallorann was brought on board because of his unique ability to locate this being. The story also explores the being’s mysterious origins and how the Shokopiwah tribe historically worked to keep it hidden.

The happenings in the first episode, combined with other odd events and the feeling of being outsiders, unite the members of the Welcome to Derry’s Losers’ Club: Lilly, Ronnie, Will, and later, Marge. It’s confirmed, as many viewers guessed, that Marge eventually becomes the mother of . She chose the name “Richie” for her son to honor Rich, who tragically died in the Black Spot fire while rescuing her.

Besides Hallorann and the Hanlon family, we also see Ingrid Kersh again. She’s the daughter of Bob Gray, who lived in the early 1900s. The story shows how Bob adopted the form of Pennywise after noticing children were attracted to him. We learn more about Ingrid and Bob’s pasts, and it’s confirmed they are actual people, not just creations of the entity.

The story concludes with Pennywise being defeated by a group of kids once more. The Hanlon family chooses to remain in Derry and start a new life there, and Dick Hallorann begins working as a cook at a hotel. At the same time, Ingrid is living at Juniper Hill, where she eventually meets a young Beverly Marsh for the first time.

What Do We Know About It: Welcome to Derry Season 2?

The first season of the show will take place in 1935, following Pennywise’s awakening to begin a year-long hunt. According to members of the Shokopiwah tribe, this cycle always culminates in a significant, violent event known as “the augury.” The previous season’s event was the devastating fire at the Black Spot, which tragically killed several people, including a boy named Rich. The event for 1935, as described in Stephen King’s book, will be the infamous Bradley Gang Massacre.

The Bradley Gang was a group of criminals who hid out in Derry before being killed by a mob. They were referenced in Season 1 of the show when the Losers Club discovered their hideout – still marked with bullet holes and containing skeletons – while looking for It.

The first season features scenes set in 1935, revealing Ingrid’s work at Juniper Hill after her father went missing. These flashbacks show her encountering the entity known as ‘It’ and desperately trying to save her father from it. The entity starts communicating with Ingrid, and the story hints that she may have unknowingly led children to ‘It’ as a source of food. This part of the story will be further developed in the upcoming second season.

Who Stars in Season 2?

Bill Skarsgård is known for playing the terrifying clown Pennywise. He first took on the role in the 2017 remake of the story, continuing a legacy started by Tim Curry, who famously played Pennywise in the 1990 TV miniseries. Skarsgård is also a producer on the show.

Tyner Rushing is expected to reprise her role as Ingrid Gray, though this hasn’t been officially announced. She previously played the character in scenes set in 1935, which appeared within the show’s 1962 storyline.
