As a big TV fan, I’ve been following Dexter for ages – it’s seriously one of those shows that just kept going! From the original series that ran from 2006 to 2013, through Dexter: New Blood, and even with the newer takes like Original Sin and Resurrection, the world of Dexter has just expanded over time. It was really exciting because, until recently, they were planning even more spin-offs to build on the story.
The first new show was Original Sin, which premiered on Showtime and Paramount+ in 2024. Following that, a prequel series focusing on John Lithgow’s character, the Trinity Killer, was in the works. Though ultimately cancelled, this series had progressed quite far – John Lithgow had already committed to the project, and scripts for all episodes had been completed.
Who Was In It?
John Lithgow was set to return as Arthur Mitchell, better known as the Trinity Killer, in a planned new series. He originally played the character in the show’s fourth season, and the Trinity Killer is widely considered one of the most memorable villains on television in recent years.
As a big fan of the Dexter universe, I was thrilled to hear this! Clyde Phillips, the showrunner for the original four seasons and now these new installments like New Blood, Original Sin, and Resurrection, recently told Deadline that John Lithgow was willing to reprise his role as Arthur Mitchell… just by lending his voice! Apparently, Michael C. Hall also agreed to do the same for the prequel, lending his voice to Dexter Morgan. It’s awesome to see these key players still involved, even in this new direction.
This suggests John Lithgow’s character would act as a narrator, meaning a different actor would have played Trinity. However, this doesn’t rule out Lithgow potentially reappearing in the show – Dexter often brought back characters through flashbacks, dreams, or ghostly appearances.
We recently saw this happen in the first episode of Dexter: Resurrection, where Dexter experienced hallucinations of characters from his past – James Doakes, Miguel Prado, and even Arthur Mitchell – while in a coma. This means that even if his role was mostly voice work, John Lithgow could have physically appeared in the show somehow.
Phillips said no one else had been cast before the show was put on hold. However, based on the plot details that have emerged, they likely would have chosen an actor around thirty-five years old to play the character Mitchell.
When Was It Set?
Scott Reynolds, a veteran of both the original Dexter series and the recent revival, shared in an interview that a planned story idea would have been set in 1982. This would have placed it 27 years before Mitchell encountered Dexter and eight years before the storyline introduced in Original Sin.
The team behind Original Sin intentionally captured the feel of the early 1990s through its music, fashion, and other details. If the Trinity series had taken a similar approach, it would have prominently featured Miami and its culture from the early 1980s.
This would place the Trinity storyline among the earliest events shown in the Dexter universe, only preceded by flashbacks of Dexter’s mother featured in the first few seasons of Dexter and throughout Original Sin season one.
Trinity is a serial killer who travels the country pretending to run a charity called Four Walls. In each city he visits, he repeats the same pattern of murders. Because of this, viewers might not only recognize the timeframe of the crimes, but also the locations where they took place.
Although the story was initially planned to center around Trinity’s family in Miami, the show might also have explored Mitchell’s travels and other killings in different states.
What Was The Story?
Even though the show was canceled, details about its plot have remained largely secret. However, we know the basic idea involved a young Arthur Mitchell grappling with his developing violent tendencies, and some of the story would have been set in Miami.
As a longtime movie fan, I always found it fascinating that Trinity’s pattern of killing never really changed over the years. I think a deeper exploration of that consistent cycle would have been really compelling in the story, too.
The Trinity Killer operates in a repeating pattern: he begins by kidnapping and burying a ten-year-old boy. Next, he murders a young woman – often by slitting her wrists while she’s in the bathtub – as seen with Dexter’s wife, Rita, during one of Mitchell’s rituals. After that, he forces a mother to commit suicide, and finally, he kills a father by beating him to death in public.
As seen in season four of Dexter, this pattern reflects the difficult childhood of Arthur Mitchell. His sister died accidentally in the bathtub, a tragedy echoed in the way Lithgow’s character murders a young woman in a tub and stages it to look like a suicide.
Arthur experienced another devastating loss with his mother’s suicide, a trauma he later replays by forcing another mother to jump from a high building.
Trinity then brutally attacks and kills a man in an alley behind a bar. The victim resembles Trinity’s father. However, this killing isn’t about how Trinity’s father actually died; it’s a symbolic act of revenge against him, carried out by Lithgow through Trinity’s actions.
The disturbing ritual culminates – or, as Dexter discovers during his battle with Trinity, truly begins – with the burial of a ten-year-old boy. This act is symbolic, as the child represents a young Arthur Mitchell, trapped within a damaging and deadly family with no apparent hope of rescue. Trinity emphasizes this connection in season four by deliberately referring to the kidnapped boy as ‘Arthur’ instead of his given name.
The Trinity spin-off series promised to delve much deeper into those events. Clyde Phillips praised the ten-episode season’s scripts as “beautifully written,” which might frustrate fans of the original Dexter. However, there are still many more captivating Dexter stories planned, with Resurrection expected to run for at least three seasons.
Dexter is streaming now on Paramount+.
