Zach Cregger’s popular show, Weapons, captivated viewers with a story that blended mystery and horror. The unsettling disappearance of a classroom full of children filled the town with fear and suspicion. As residents accused one another, a hidden and sinister force was at work.
The source of the unsettling events turned out to be a woman called Aunt Gladys, who claimed to be the great-aunt of Alex Lilly – the only student who was mysteriously vanishing at night. Actress Amy Madigan portrayed Aunt Gladys, and her bizarre, almost clown-like look was deeply disturbing. Despite her strange appearance, the violence she caused was terrifyingly real.
Aunt Gladys is a compelling horror villain partly because we know so little about her. While hints suggest reasons for her control over the people of Maybrook, her background remains largely a mystery. Hopefully, the creator, Cregger, will reveal more about her soon.
What Weapons Reveals About Aunt Gladys‘ Origin
Aunt Gladys said she’s related to Alex’s mom, and Alex’s parents seemed to recognize her as a family member. However, we don’t have any real proof of their connection, and she doesn’t hesitate to cause trouble for Alex’s parents—or even for Alex himself.
There’s strong evidence suggesting Aunt Gladys is a witch, and her abilities seem rooted in Celtic traditions. She appears to practice magic using a blackthorn bush, a method historically linked to witchcraft in Ireland and Western Europe. Furthermore, people around town have reported seeing her in their dreams and visions, leading many to believe she’s causing trouble for everyone.
As a movie buff, I always dig the ‘why’ of a villain, and in this case, it’s pretty creepy. We never get a full explanation of how she does it, but it’s clear this woman comes to Maybrook to basically steal energy from people to stay alive – it’s a classic witch move, right? That’s why she’s snatching Alex’s classmates from their homes and stashing them in his basement – she’s draining their life force to recharge herself. It’s a really unsettling motivation, and it drives the whole plot.
Okay, so this character is clearly way older than she looks. It’s not just hinted at, it’s practically shouted at you. The way she talks – specifically, using the word ‘consumption’ to mean tuberculosis – immediately places her firmly in the 19th century. That detail alone suggests she’s lived for centuries, and honestly, it makes me wonder just how far back her story really goes. It’s a fascinating little clue that really adds to the mystery.
What Weapons Director Zach Cregger Has Said About Aunt Gladys’ Origin
Director Zach Cregger intentionally left the backstory of Aunt Gladys open to interpretation, and that includes for the actress who played her, Amy Madigan. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Cregger explained that he presented Madigan with two possible origins for the character, allowing her to decide which one felt right without ever asking her to share her choice.
I gave Amy two possible backstories to choose from. I told her she could pick whichever one she liked, explaining that they were quite different. I made it clear she didn’t need to share her choice with me, but it had to be one of the two. I still don’t know which one she went with.
Madigan believes Gladys is either a normal person desperately using dark magic to survive a deadly illness, or a creature disguising itself as a human – and the bad makeup is a sign of that disguise.
Cregger saw his Aunt Gladys as a way to work through his own childhood experiences. He explained that her character was based on his life, drawing parallels between Gladys’ influence and the pull of addiction. He grew up with parents struggling with addiction, and he portrayed this through Alex, who feared returning to a home life dominated by his parents’ struggles, comparing them to ‘zombies’.
A Weapons Prequel Movie About Aunt Gladys Is In Development
After his horror film Weapons became a huge hit – earning $268.3 million despite costing only $38 million to make – Zach Cregger announced he’s making a prequel. The new movie will focus on the story of Aunt Gladys and how she ended up in Maybrook. Given the success of Weapons, a return to that world was expected, and Aunt Gladys’s backstory seemed like the perfect place to start.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping Warner Bros. makes that prequel, but honestly, it’s not a done deal yet. From what I understand, it’s probably a ways off too – Cregger is still wrapping up the Resident Evil reboot and has a few other things he’s working on first. So, we’ll have to wait a couple of years, at least, if it happens at all.
He’s stated he plans to explore the world of Weapons further, revealing he actually began brainstorming a backstory for Aunt Gladys even before the first movie came out. If a prequel is made, we’ll likely learn more about this mysterious character, as many questions were left unanswered in the original Weapons film.
