Following the less-than-stellar Golden Globes event last year, reminiscent of Jo Koy’s shape, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is likely eager to move past that unfortunate incident and start fresh. Luckily, Nikki Glaser has stepped up as this year’s host, ready to take on the evening’s festivities. The bar for improvement is quite low, but Glaser seems well-equipped for the job. Known for her sharp wit, she had a standout year in 2024, particularly with her hilarious performance at the Tom Brady roast last summer. Moreover, she’s been actively promoting her preparation for this role, which contrasts nicely with her predecessor. Tonight, Glaser will have plenty of A-list personalities to work with: Viola Davis and Ted Danson are set to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Carol Burnett Award respectively, and an impressive lineup of presenters includes Catherine O’Hara, Colin Farrell, Rob McElhenney (but not Ryan Reynolds), Jennifer Coolidge, and even Elton John!

From my perspective as a movie enthusiast, the award season is a whirlwind of excitement and anticipation. The Oscar race is still anyone’s game, leaving room for organizations like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to make an impact.

A film that resonates with the HFPA, “Emilia Pérez,” has taken a commanding lead with an impressive ten nominations in the Comedy/Musical category – a record-breaking number! Close behind are “The Brutalist” and “Conclave,” each boasting seven and six nominations respectively. The unique categorization of Drama and Comedy/Musical films by the Globes also brings about unexpected nominations, such as Hugh Grant’s nod for “Heretic.”

As we eagerly await the results, Mikey Madison’s stellar performance in “Anora” has us on edge. However, the HFAA’s fondness for “The Substance” could sway the vote towards Demi Moore. Will Denzel Washington secure the victory over Kieran Culkin in the Supporting Actor category? Time will tell, but that’s where the politics come into play!

On the television front, an unexpected twist has arisen with Squid Game’s second season being nominated for Best Drama Series, even though it hasn’t been released when the HFPA announced its nominees. Its underwhelming reception since its December 26 premiere, coupled with Emmy favorite Shogun, could pose challenges. The Best Comedy Series category is filled with regulars like Hacks, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, and Only Murders in the Building battling it out. However, who knows: Nobody anticipated Nobody Wants This to gain as much popularity as it did. Our resident experts Nate Jones and Joe Reid have shared their predictions, and you can view the complete list of nominations here.

The evening is stretching out before us all, so why not spend it with Vulture and guide you throughout? Let’s enjoy the night together!

This is a developing story.

Jeremy Strong continues love affair with bucket hats

Our top pick consistently sports the popular hat style featured in GQ, from city streets to subways, and here he is on the Golden Globes red carpet wearing his signature bucket hat. The color seems to be somewhere between green, teal, and seafoam, while the suit appears to be made of velvet material. To top it off, he’s also sporting a matching pair of glasses. I adore this look on him!

TV moments to watch for tonight

In the Best Limited or Anthology Series and Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series nominations, it’s shaping up to be quite the competition between “The Penguin” and “Baby Reindeer”. The latter was a significant success on premium TV last year and took home six Emmys. This marks “The Penguin”‘s debut at a major awards event, with Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti as strong frontrunners for the lead roles.

Pay close attention to “Nobody Wants This” in the comedy category at the Globes… Historically, these awards tend to favor new shows. With “The Bear”, “Hacks”, and “Abbott Elementary” taking most of the comedy awards over the past three years, there’s a possibility that Netflix’s romantic comedy could make a surprising entrance and potentially win big, thanks to its stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell.

If Jeremy Allen White takes home the Best Actor in a TV Comedy award for The Bear, it would mark his third consecutive win in this category. The last time an actor achieved three consecutive wins in this category was Michael J. Fox for Spin City from 1997–1999, and the last time any TV performer managed three consecutive wins was Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City (1999–2001).

If Harrison Ford were to win Best Supporting Actor in a TV Show, it would mark his first competitive victory at any major awards ceremony, as he has previously received Lifetime/Career Achievement accolades from various prestigious events such as Cannes, the César Awards, Critics Choice, Globes, and most recently, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2022.

Should Kathryn Hahn triumph tonight… this will mark her first significant acting accolade, much like Harrison Ford, and an unprecedented milestone for a Marvel TV series.

If Nikki Glaser or Seth Meyers takes home the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television award, it will be the second occasion within the two-year history of this prize that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organizers of the Golden Globes, have honored a presenter who has hosted or currently hosts the Golden Globe Awards (Ricky Gervais, five-time host, won last year).

Viola Davis comes full circle

Tonight, as I watch the Golden Globes, I’ll be filled with pride as Viola Davis accepts the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement. This moment marks a full circle in my journey, echoing back eight years to when I stood on that very stage at the Beverly Hilton, presenting this same award to my esteemed friend and colleague, Meryl Streep.

The task of honoring a career as illustrious as Meryl Streep’s was no small feat, but Davis was ready for it. With a dramatic flair that only someone who had delivered the monologue from Sophie’s Choice could understand, Davis began with heavy foreshadowing: “She perceives you…

During the span of her four-minute speech, Davis employed a variety of tactics: she addressed you directly, playfully teased Meryl for her expertise in collard greens, frequently referenced Émile Zola and her spouse, Julius. She culminated her homage to “Dame” Streep by expressing, “You make me honored to be an artist.

The season for awards is based around celebrities honoring each other with glittering trophies and eloquent speeches. It encourages even the most ardent award spectators to succumb to cynicism and view it as inherently insincere. However, instead of attempting to counter these criticisms with humility, many presenters and recipients should recognize this as a valid perspective. Davis and Streep, who acknowledged half the room’s celebrities in her acceptance speech and called for resistance while hoarse from shouting at Women’s March protests, understand that facing it head-on is the best approach. Davis introduced Streep as if she were delivering an inaugural address on the Capitol steps, and Streep accepted as if she were the de facto leader of Hollywood that evening.

In the role of host tonight, Davis has set quite a high standard for the next presenter to match.

Keeping an eye out for Mike Faist

It’s possible I saw him walking up Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn an hour or so ago.
