Everything That Happened at the SNL50 Concert

Is it noteworthy that this weekend marks the birthday of Saturday Night Live? Before the NBC show’s 50th anniversary special, a prelude to the celebrations took place at Radio City Music Hall on Valentine’s Day with SNL50‘s homecoming concert. Jimmy Fallon shared his reason for hosting during his opening monologue: “Well, it’s awards season, which means I have no other commitments right now.” Although there were no actual awards being given (apologies to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson), the entire event felt like a victory for someone – us. Specifically, those of us who appreciate the extensive roster of singers, SNL cast members, and famous guests who graced the stage and audience. Here are some highlights from the three-hour musical extravaganza: Lady Gaga contributed her vocals to a Lonely Island medley, Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer performed “Not Like Us” as the Culps, David Byrne and Robyn danced together on “Dancing On My Own,” and more.

Jimmy Fallon was just being honest.

Fallon, catching his breath, made a reference to SNL during his opening monologue following his energetic Blues Brothers tribute performance accompanied by The Roots. His candidness was evident throughout the show; at one point, he jokingly remarked, “This is thrilling – there are thousands of people here, and hundreds more watching on Peacock.

Miley Cyrus gently called the crowd out.

If you’re not joining in when she’s holding the microphone, then you could express your affection for her even more deeply, my dear.

Steven Spielberg checked on the cameras during Bad Bunny’s set.

He just wanted to make sure Benito’s performance was being filmed in the best way possible, okay?

Bill Murray’s Nick the Lounge Singer hard-launched his relationship(s).

In the role of an audience member, I found myself captivated as Paul Shaffer skillfully played the piano. That night, Murray, our charismatic host, shared his affection for three remarkable women: Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, and a radiantly pregnant Cecily Strong.

Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman ‘banged’ for the B-52s.

And Sandra Oh helped out from the audience.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson thought this was an awards show.

‘Tis the reason for the (awards) season.

Backstreet’s back.

It’s indisputable that the microphones were functioning, as evident by the well-known personalities moving in rhythm to “I Want It That Way,” and the inclusion of Jerry Springer joining them in song.

Lady Gaga put her what in a box?

She teamed up with Andy Samberg to launch a medley by The Lonely Island, which also included Bad Bunny, T-Pain, Chris Parnell shouting “MUSTARRRRRD”, Jorma Taccone, and Eddie Vedder. Notably, by the finale, Lady Gaga was wearing a box as part of the performance.

Short ‘n’ Streep fueled the rumors.

We’re not denying that Meryl Streep and Martin Short may have been on a Valentine’s Day-type outing, if you catch our drift.

Lauryn Hill was right on time.

Performing together with Wyclef Jean, we’ll be playing “Lost Ones,” “Ex-Factor,” “911,” and the beautiful rendition of “Killing Me Softly With His Song.

The Culps weighed in on the Kendrick/Drake beef.

It might be advantageous that Peacock isn’t accessible in Canada. Following his performance of “Not Like Us,” Will Ferrell/Marty Culp jokingly asked, “By any chance, are Kenny Lamar and Drake Graham here? Perhaps you two could reconcile tonight in the spirit of love and camaraderie. No? Not even in the underworld?

Post Malone fronted Nirvana.

It was already clear that Post and Dave Grohl were attending the concert, but when Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear unexpectedly showed up, it transformed the event into a reunion of all remaining original band members.

Robyn and David Byrne danced together to “Dancing On My Own.”

In matching suits, no less.

Beyoncé and Prince made a special appearance.

Indeed, it was Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen reviving their impersonations. At first, Prince seemed a bit bashful, but when it came time for him to introduce the next act, he confidently revealed that it was going to be Cher.

Kevin Costner couldn’t help but stare at Cher.

Even Lorne Michaels was singing along.

Finally, Jack White and his band had the last performance of the night.

The final lyrics the crowd listened to before it was time to depart for home were appropriately ‘Please, return home.’
