Every ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-off in Development

Now that Stranger Things has ended, it was almost expected that more stories would be told in the same universe. It’s common for popular shows to get spin-offs, and Netflix’s hit series is no different. Currently, two spin-off shows are officially being developed, and there’s talk of a third. Whether these new shows will live up to the quality of the original remains to be seen.

It’s rare for spin-offs to live up to the original show, so if the new ones aren’t huge hits, that wouldn’t be surprising. The original series was incredibly successful – it earned 256 award nominations, won 81 awards, and consistently received a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Matching that level of success is a tall order, like trying to follow in LeBron James’ footsteps as a basketball player. However, anything is possible. Fans are hoping the new shows will be as good as Better Call Saul, and not end up like Suits: LA. Hopefully, the creators won’t overdo it and exhaust the franchise.

Here’s every Stranger Things spin-off to watch out for.

‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’

Unconfirmed 2026 release date

Netflix

Look, if you’re still mourning the end of Stranger Things, get ready to cheer up! Netflix just gave us a sneak peek at Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, a new animated series. It’s set in Hawkins, Indiana, during the winter of 1985 – right between seasons two and three. Basically, we get to see Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Will, Dustin, and Max tackling fresh monsters from the Upside Down and unraveling a brand new spooky mystery. It’s a fun way to revisit those characters and that world!

This new series seems aimed at kids, so don’t anticipate any scary content. The creators, the Duffer brothers, told Culture Slate they want it to feel like a classic ’80s cartoon. Good news for fans who enjoyed the earlier seasons of the original show – the characters won’t grow up, and it will recapture that sense of childhood wonder and curiosity.

The animated series will be led by Eric Robles, the creator of the Nickelodeon show Fanboy & Chum Chum, with the Duffer brothers (known for Stranger Things) as executive producers. Robles draws inspiration from classic 80s cartoons like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, and The Real Ghostbusters. The show will also feature impressive creature designs, thanks to the involvement of Carlos Huante, a creature designer who has worked on films like Prometheus and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Untitled Live-Action Spin-off

Unconfirmed Release Date

Netflix

If you’re a fan of Stranger Things but are looking for something new, a spin-off show is on the way. The Duffer brothers, creators of the original series, told The Hollywood Reporter that this new show will take place in a different time period and follow a new set of characters. However, it will still be part of the same overall Stranger Things story. Ross Duffer shared that they’ve been developing this idea for years and are very enthusiastic about it.

Details about the spin-off’s style and overall feel were scarce, but actor Finn Wolfhard offered some insight in a Variety article on August 5, 2025. He described it as being reminiscent of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, calling it “an anthology” of sorts, with stories unfolding in various locations all connected to the lore of the Upside Down. This raises the question of where new labs might be located – perhaps in Europe or Asia? Matt Duffer later confirmed that the spin-off would feature a fresh start with entirely new characters, stating, “It’s like a clean slate. You’re not tied up in any knots.”

This new show could be great even if you’ve never seen the original series. While the Duffer brothers are still creatively involved, they won’t be handling all the production details, as they’re now working on new projects for Paramount. It remains to be seen if the spin-off will capture the same feeling as the original. The Duffers hinted that the show might connect to the mysterious rock seen in the finale’s briefcase, and when asked about it, Matt Duffer playfully described it as “spin-off-y.”

‘Stranger Things: Tokyo’

Rumored

Netflix

Back in 2022, Discussing Film announced that a new anime series based on Stranger Things was being created. The series, called Stranger Things: Tokyo, will center around twin brothers who are gamers living just outside of Tokyo in the 1980s, and whose lives are turned upside down when they come across the mysterious Upside Down.

Netflix and the creators of the show have never confirmed or denied the existence of this supposed spin-off, and there haven’t been any new announcements about it lately. This suggests the project may have been cancelled or is being reworked, potentially to connect with either the upcoming animated series or the live-action show, which will explore labs in different countries.

A Stranger Things spin-off would likely be very successful, especially considering the show’s huge popularity in Japan. The recent “One Last Adventure in Tokyo” event, which featured creators the Duffer brothers and some of the actors, was incredibly popular, with thousands of people trying to get one of the limited tickets. Plus, Stranger Things has consistently been the most-watched series on streaming platforms in Japan.

All five seasons of Stranger Things are currently available to stream on Netflix.
