Every Heavenly Restriction In Jujutsu Kaisen, Explained

Negative emotions – like fear, anger, and sadness – take physical form as dangerous spirits. Those who fight these spirits, known as sorcerers, learn to control and transform these same emotions into powerful abilities using a force called Cursed Energy. While everyone possesses some Cursed Energy, a rare few are born with limitations called Heavenly Restrictions.

Maki couldn’t initially perceive cursed energy without glasses, but she gained the ability after Mai’s death. This was due to a ‘Heavenly Restriction’ – a unique aspect of the power system in Jujutsu Kaisen where sorcerers trade physical strength for jujutsu power, or vice versa. Because Jujutsu Kaisen‘s power system is so intricate, understanding these restrictions is key to fully understanding how everything works.

The Heavenly Restriction Starts With a Binding Vow

A Heavenly Restriction is essentially a curse placed on someone at birth. It’s similar to a Binding Vow, where a person intentionally limits themselves in one area to become incredibly powerful in another. However, with a Heavenly Restriction, the limitation is forced upon them, sacrificing their spiritual energy for immense physical strength. This condition only affects those sorcerers who are exceptionally powerful and rare.

A Heavenly Restriction is a lifelong condition someone is born with and cannot change. It usually manifests in one of two ways: most commonly, a person has limited or no cursed energy but gains exceptional physical strength. Less often, someone is born with a very fragile body alongside a massive amount of cursed energy.

Kokichi’s Heavenly Restriction Left Him Physically Disabled

Kokichi Muta is the person controlling Ultimate Mechamaru. He has missing limbs and extremely sensitive skin, making him allergic to sunlight. He constantly experiences intense, stabbing pain all over his body.

I’ve encountered someone named Kokichi, and his situation is truly remarkable – and heartbreaking. He’s born with a severe physical disability, but an incredible amount of cursed energy. What’s even more astounding is his ability to control puppets all over Japan – enough, they say, to bring down a nation. Because of his condition, he can’t physically attend school or fight, so he uses a special puppet called Ultimate Mechamaru as his stand-in. It’s a really tough situation; everyone sees him as strong and dependable, but he can’t actually fight with them, and that must be incredibly isolating.

Toji Lacks Cursed Energy, But Landed a Hit On Satoru Gojo

Because Toji doesn’t have any cursed energy, sorcerers can’t sense him, which allowed him to successfully attack even the most powerful of them. While he has no cursed energy at all, he’s incredibly strong and a skilled fighter. This makes him unaffected by curses, exceptionally fast, and nearly unbeatable.

I’ve always been struck by Toji in Jujutsu Kaisen. Physically, he was a match for some of the strongest sorcerers, and the nickname ‘Sorcerer Killer’ felt completely earned. While someone like Gojo embodies the absolute pinnacle of cursed technique mastery, Toji was all about raw, unstoppable strength – he didn’t need cursed energy. Knowing how badly the Zenin clan treated him, it feels like his incredible power was a deliberate rejection of everything sorcery stands for, a kind of defiant force of nature.

Everyone Underestimated Maki, But She’s One Of JJK’s Strongest Characters

Maki was incredibly strong, even before fully realizing her potential – her power was comparable to a skilled sorcerer. However, the Zenin clan didn’t acknowledge her abilities because she was born without cursed energy, unlike the rest of her family, and they often labeled her a failure. Maki actually had a hidden limitation, known as an incomplete Heavenly Restriction. When her twin sister, Mai, made the ultimate sacrifice, Maki’s cursed energy was completely suppressed, mirroring the condition of Toji.

With her new powers unlocked, Maki finally reached the same skill level as Toji. She continued to grow stronger throughout the series, even managing to withstand a direct hit from one of his Black Flashes. Despite facing mistreatment, particularly from her own family, Maki proved to be a uniquely powerful and formidable character in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Tsurugi Okkotsu is Maki and Yuta’s Grandson in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

Yuta Okkotsu doesn’t have absolutely zero cursed energy, but he has a special limitation that gives him immense power in return for limiting his own. Similar to Maki Zenin when we first meet her in Jujutsu Kaisen, he’s skilled at using cursed tools. What’s really unique, though, is his ability to summon Rika using Yuta’s ring.

Initially, Rika disliked Tsurugi, refusing to work with him due to his strong resemblance to someone from her past, Maki. Once she began cooperating with him, Tsurugi unlocked a power similar to his grandfather’s. He also started using a cursed sword, allowing him to perform a quicker version of the New Shadow Style technique called Batto Sword Drawing. This technique causes his sword, Hoyonagi, to ignite everything around him.
