As a big fan of HBO Max, I’m really excited about what they’re offering this December! It seems like there’s something for everyone. If you’re in the mood for something deep and meaningful, they’ve got a beautiful documentary and a really moving film about family and faith. But if you just want to laugh out loud, they’ve got a long-awaited sequel and a hilarious new stand-up special from someone I love on SNL. It’s great to see HBO Max offering both really important, artistic content and just pure, fun entertainment – they really do have it all!

‘Architecton’ (2025)

Viktor Kossakovsky’s new documentary is more than just a film; it’s a beautiful and thoughtful exploration of the world around us. Titled Architecton, the documentary looks at the history of architecture, focusing on the use of stone. It also shows how stone is broken down and destroyed – both by humans and natural forces – creating a sense of a continuous cycle. The film ultimately examines our long-standing dependence on stone and the complicated ways we interact with this essential resource.
The idea behind this project is intentionally thought-provoking. It aims to create a reflective experience, similar to the feeling you might get from the documentary Working Man’s Death or the visually stunning films Koyaanisqatsi and the Qatsi trilogy. ‘The Family McMullen’ (2025)

The movie The Family McMullen centers on three Irish-American brothers – Jack, Barry, and Patrick – who live on Long Island and are all dealing with personal challenges. When their mother unexpectedly returns to Ireland, leaving their father, the brothers are forced to examine their past and how their Catholic faith has shaped them.
Director Edward Burns is back with a sequel to his acclaimed film, The Brothers McMullen. The Family McMullen catches up with some of the original characters as they navigate life’s challenges years later. The film delivers the same heartwarming and insightful look at everyday life that fans loved in the first movie, with a particular focus on themes relatable to those with a religious upbringing. ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ (2025)

Four decades after the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap first came out, the band members have moved on with their lives. Nigel now lives in the English countryside, owning a small craft shop and playing folk music. David is composing jingles in California, after his wife became a nun. And Derek runs a museum dedicated to glue, though he still writes music occasionally. Despite their separate paths, the band is contractually obligated to reunite as Spinal Tap, and director Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner) is there to film their comeback.
After a long wait, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues faced high expectations, but it didn’t quite reach the same level as the first movie and didn’t perform well in theaters. However, streaming offers a second chance for the film to find a larger audience and achieve success. Fans of the original say the sequel captures the heart and humor of Spinal Tap, blending nostalgic charm with a fresh, updated feel. Comedy lovers can now check it out themselves, as Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is available on HBO Max starting December 12, 2025.
‘Sarah Squirm: Live + In the Flesh’ (Stand-up Special)

Sarah Squirm (also known as Sarah Sherman) is a comedian, actor, and writer who’s been gaining recognition for her work on shows like The Eric Andre Show, Three Busy Debras, and Magic for Humans. In 2023, she became a featured player on Saturday Night Live. She’s known for her uniquely strange and unpredictable comedy, and her new HBO Max special promises to showcase that style throughout her stand-up performance.
Comedy is a matter of taste, but Sarah Squirm’s funny and honest takes on current events and her personal struggles make her shows really entertaining – if you’re ready for her unique style.
