Every Cancelled Spider-Man Film, Ranked

Spider-Man is arguably one of the most beloved movie characters ever created, but even he hasn’t escaped changes made by studio executives. In the last twenty-four years, the superhero has appeared in over a dozen films, including the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, some of his most promising projects were unfortunately canceled before they could be released.

Throughout the years, several Spider-Man movies have been planned but never made, for various reasons. Some had completely new takes on the Spider-Man story, while others were intended as continuations of movie series that ultimately fell apart. Despite being cancelled, a few of these unmade Spider-Man films still capture the interest of fans.

No One Wanted an El Muerto Movie

Sony had plans for a standalone movie about the Spider-Man character El Muerto, with Bad Bunny set to play the lead role. The film would have told the story of Juan Carlos Sánchez and his transformation into the superpowered wrestler known as El Muerto. It was intended to be part of the same shared universe as films like Morbius and Venom.

Following the poor performance of Kraven the Hunter in cinemas, Sony has cancelled plans for an El Muerto movie, and it’s easy to see why. Like other Spider-Man villain spinoffs, interest in an El Muerto film was low. While characters like Madame Web and Venom are somewhat known, El Muerto is a relatively obscure Marvel character, even among dedicated Spider-Man fans. Considering this, and the generally underwhelming reception to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe films so far, it’s probable that El Muerto wouldn’t have been a successful movie even if it had been released.

James Cameron’s Spider-Man Sounds Dark and Twisted

Before Sam Raimi directed the popular Spider-Man movies, James Cameron, a well-known director, planned his own Spider-Man film. Cameron’s version would have been grittier and focused on the physical changes Peter Parker experiences after being bitten by the spider.

Although the director shared a few unclear ideas about his take on the character, his Spider-Man probably wouldn’t have had the same lasting impact as Sam Raimi’s films. In the end, Marvel was right to put Cameron’s project on hold and wait for the perfect moment to bring Spider-Man to the big screen.

Hypno-Hustler Could Have Been Interesting

Before Sony’s plans for a Spider-Man-related movie universe were cancelled, they considered making a film about the obscure villain, Hypno-Hustler. This villain uses hypnosis to commit crimes. Donald Glover, who appeared as Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming, was going to play the role of Antoine Delsoin, also known as Hypno-Hustler.

Even before it was cancelled, Hypno-Hustler, like El Muerto and other projects from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, didn’t seem like a particularly strong idea. However, the movie could have stood out from other superhero films with a surprisingly different style. Donald Glover is very popular with Spider-Man fans, and his involvement might have made Hypno-Hustler better than a typical, commercially-driven SSU film. Although Glover probably won’t play Hypno-Hustler now, he’s still expected to appear as the Prowler in future projects.

Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six Movie Would United Spider-Man’s Worst Enemies

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tried to do too much, introducing many characters and setting up potential sequels to build Sony’s Marvel universe. The movie ended with a hint at a Sinister Six spinoff, featuring a team of Spider-Man’s iconic villains like the Vulture, Doctor Octopus, and the Rhino. This project actually progressed quite far – a script was even written by Drew Goddard.

The plans for a Sinister Six movie were dropped when Sony restarted the Spider-Man franchise and connected it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would have been amazing to see Spider-Man’s most iconic villains team up for revenge, and even though a separate movie for them isn’t the answer, audiences would definitely be excited to see Spider-Man battle his biggest foes in a film.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 Is Still Rumored Twenty Years Later

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies remain incredibly popular, and there were plans for a fourth film. After Spider-Man 3 received criticism, Raimi intended to make a sequel to win back fans. Tobey Maguire was going to reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and the story would have featured new villains like the Vulture and Mysterio.

Rather than continue with Spider-Man 4, Sony decided to start the series over with a new actor as Spider-Man, eventually casting Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). Even though almost twenty years have passed since Sam Raimi’s original trilogy finished, fans still want to see a continuation. While a sequel would be welcome, it’s not essential, as Tobey Maguire’s story received a satisfying conclusion, something not all Spider-Man adaptations have achieved.

Spider-Man vs. The Amazing Spider-Man Almost Happened Before No Way Home

Years ago, Sony considered a movie where Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man characters would have first met. The initial idea involved a conflict between them, but it likely would have evolved into them joining forces to fight a bigger villain.

A team-up between Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was originally planned, but it was cancelled when the Marvel Cinematic Universe rebooted the character. While the eventual team-up in No Way Home was great, fans still hope to see Maguire and Garfield share the screen again in a separate movie focused on their versions of Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 Would Have Concluded Andrew Garfield’s Storyline

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 unfortunately marked the end of Andrew Garfield’s time as the lead Spider-Man. Plans existed for at least two more movies that would have fully developed his character’s story, and some details about these unmade sequels have emerged. One intriguing idea involved bringing Gwen Stacy back as the villain Carnage, inspired by a popular storyline from Marvel’s Ultimate comic book series.

The poor performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led Sony to restart the Spider-Man movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which unfortunately ended Andrew Garfield’s story arc. Many fans were thrilled to see him reprise the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and now hope he gets the chance to finish his trilogy. He’s the only Spider-Man who hasn’t had a full three-movie run, and a lot of people believe he deserves another opportunity to complete his story.
