Even Marathon’s easiest maps kill over half its players

Bungie shared some initial results from the Marathon Server Slam test, and players weren’t very successful on the trial maps.

I just saw a video from the developers, and it’s pretty wild! They said that even on Perimeter, the very first map – you know, the one designed to be easy – less than half of us actually make it out alive. Apparently, the exfil rate is just under 42%. It’s crazy to think that even in what’s basically the tutorial area, most players are getting wiped!

On the Dire Marsh map, players had an even harder time escaping. Only about 36% managed to successfully exfil, meaning almost two-thirds of attempts ended in failure.

I was really hoping they’d explain why so few people made it off each map – whether it was other players taking us down, or those tough UESC enemies. It’s a shame they didn’t give us those details!

Marathon has a brutal survival rate & there are harder maps to come

It’s remarkable that these results come from the simplest maps in Marathon. Players haven’t had a chance to experience the two newest maps, Outpost and Cyro Archive, yet.

Since you’ll unlock these features as you progress, they’ll probably make the game even more challenging.

We’ve explored the Outpost map, which the developers have called a challenging and chaotic battlefield. It’s packed with enemy forces and features narrow spaces that will push teams into close-quarters combat, making it a tough environment.

The fourth map, called Cryo Archive, will become available when players collectively achieve a certain goal – reaching orbit. Details are scarce, but this new area will likely contain the best items in the game, and will be heavily defended.

These initial results could get better as players become more comfortable with the game, but don’t anticipate an easy experience when the official launch happens on March 5th.
