Megumi Ogata, the voice of Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion, has shared that the series’ creator, Hideaki Anno, was the only one who really understood what she was going through while working on the show. Ogata’s performance as Shinji is considered iconic and significantly shaped both her career and the anime itself.
Shinji’s struggles and sensitive nature were key to what made Evangelion so unique, and Megumi Ogata’s performance as him was highly acclaimed for portraying those deep emotions.
Looking back on her experience with the show, Ogata shared that Hideaki Anno, the series creator, was the only one who really got what she was going through as a voice actress then.
Shinji VA says Eva creator understood her struggles
In a recent interview, as reported by Automaton, voice actress Ogata discussed the pressure she felt to consistently accept emotionally challenging roles, especially those focused on young male characters. She believed maintaining her position in the industry required her to do so.
I used to believe my value depended on holding onto those emotions. I worried no one would understand me, and I feared I’d lose my place in voice acting if I stopped playing teenage boy characters, so I worked really hard to keep doing them.

Ogata recently shared that Anno’s encouragement was particularly meaningful, as she often felt isolated in the industry. In an interview, Anno told Ogata that her portrayal of Shinji was crucial to the series’ development, explaining, “Thank you for consistently capturing the emotions of a 14-year-old. Your ability to maintain that perspective was essential to creating Evangelion.”
I was so touched to hear that the voice actress for Shinji said Anno-san was the only one who really understood what she was going through. She even said working on the show made her incredibly grateful for her whole career as a voice actress, and that meant a lot to me as a fan!
