As a huge fan, I can tell you that Neon Genesis Evangelion is still considered one of the greatest anime series ever made – and it totally deserves that title! We’ve been hoping for more, and it’s finally happening! While a new TV series isn’t confirmed just yet, we’re getting a return to the world of NERV and the EVA pilots this year. And to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary in 2026, a brand new movie is coming to Japan! Studio Khara has even dropped some exciting new details online, which has everyone buzzing about what’s in store.
Khara, the studio behind the Evangelion series, has announced a new short film starring Asuka Langley Soryu to celebrate the anime’s 30th anniversary. According to the studio’s president, the film is intended as special entertainment for attendees of the “Evangelion: 30+” event. This event will be held from February 21st to 23rd at Yokohama Arena in Japan.

The Future of Evangelion
The upcoming short film is just one part of a larger celebration for the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion next month. In addition to this new film centered around Asuka, the franchise is also preparing a live-action kabuki performance reimagining the story of the EVA pilots, and a real-world exhibit dedicated to the anime. Hideaki Anno wrote and oversaw the short film, while Naoyuki Asano, who directed Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0, directed it. It’s currently unknown which of the series’ many timelines this new movie fits into. The film is thirteen minutes long, and fans are hoping it will eventually be available to watch at home.
The future of the Evangelion franchise beyond its 30th anniversary remains uncertain. Studio Khara and creator Hideaki Anno haven’t announced any new series or movies, though Anno has suggested something is being developed. Given the conclusions of both the original anime and the Rebuild of Evangelion films, it will be fascinating to see how any future adaptations featuring Shinji Ikari and the others are handled. If a new Evangelion anime project is underway, an upcoming event would be the ideal time to reveal it.
I’m really curious about the new Evangelion project – it’s going to center around Asuka Langley, which sounds fantastic! I’d love to hear your thoughts on it too. Let’s discuss it over at the ComicBook Forum!
