With Neon Genesis Evangelion celebrating its 30th anniversary, the series and its pilots are back in the spotlight. While many international fans felt excluded from the initial celebrations, Studio Khara is now bringing the festivities to North America later this year. Get ready, because Evangelion is coming back to captivate audiences once more!
Fans around the world can tune in to the Evangelion 30+ celebration starting February 21st. The event kicks off with a special presentation featuring the original voice actors, creator Hideaki Anno, and singer Yoko Takahashi. Following that will be a concert called Back to Neon Genesis EVA Fes Ver., bringing classic music from the anime to life. Over the following days, the anniversary event will also livestream a live-action Kabuki performance and other content – all for free. However, one particular project won’t be available to viewers outside of Japan.
The Evangelion Movie Not Included
Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, recently talked about a new Evangelion short film that Studio Khara will premiere at their upcoming 30th anniversary event. The film, which focuses on the character Asuka Langley, is intended as a special treat for attendees. According to Studio Khara’s president, it will offer a unique look into the world of Evangelion.
I’m really hoping this new Evangelion short film comes to North America! While there’s no official word yet, given how popular the series is, I have a feeling it will eventually. Right now, everything about Asuka’s role and exactly when in the NERV timeline it takes place is a mystery. We’ll probably get some answers when it premieres in Japan later this month. Honestly, I’m also super curious to see which Evangelion universe this fits into – there have been so many different timelines over the years!
Since the end of the Rebuild of Evangelion films, there haven’t been any announcements about the future of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime. Last year, creator Hideaki Anno suggested a new anime project might be possible, but he didn’t share many details or confirm his involvement. Now that Anno has started working on the Gundam franchise with Gundam GQuuuuuuX, we expect to hear more about his upcoming projects later this month during the 30th anniversary celebration of Evangelion.
