To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion, a new series was announced earlier this year. While details are still secret, the project will be led by Studio Khara and renowned creator Yoko Taro. Adding to the excitement, a leaked short film created by the original author, Hideaki Anno, has been circulating online, but an official release is coming very soon. This leak has sparked some controversy surrounding the characters Shinji Ikari and the other Eva pilots.
I just saw that new short film focusing on Asuka Langley, and it’s available to watch right now! Studio Khara announced it would be released on their official YouTube channel on March 7th at 10 AM Eastern time, and I’ve included a link below so you can check it out. Apparently, they timed the release to coincide with the five-year anniversary of “EVANGELION:3.0+1.0 THRICE UPON A TIME.” They also explained they’ve been working hard to stop leaked versions from spreading online and are asking everyone to watch it on their official channel instead. It’s great they’re making it so accessible!
Evangelion’s Wild Ride

I’ve been seeing a lot of footage from the new EVANGELION:30+; short film circulating online, apparently filmed by people at the performances. It looks like Khara, the company behind it, is trying to stop the leaks. They put out a statement saying they’ve confirmed people were illegally recording the film and sharing it online, and that they’ll be reviewing posts and potentially taking legal action against those who did. They’re asking for everyone’s cooperation in stopping the spread of the unauthorized footage.
This new film centers around Asuka speaking directly to the audience, reflecting on her life and what might lie ahead. While it’s mostly a playful and self-aware story, it also has some unexpected moments that surprised many viewers. Notably, there’s a scene where Asuka envisions a future with Shinji – they’re married, have a home, and start a family. Given the often bleak and ambiguous endings of both the original Evangelion series and the subsequent movies, seeing any of these characters find happiness feels quite unusual.
I’ve been following news about the next Evangelion anime, and so far, they haven’t shared any details about the story. A direct sequel seems unlikely, which makes me think it might be a complete reboot. Since there’s still no release date in sight, it looks like fans could be waiting a while to see what this new version of NERV will be like.
