To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026, Neon Genesis Evangelion has announced a variety of events, including a traditional kabuki stage play and a special exhibit. As part of these celebrations, a brand new movie is in the works, bringing Shinji Ikari and the NERV pilots back to the screen through the “Evangelion:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion” Festival. The production will also feature contributions from several well-known creators.
The official Evangelion festival website has announced that Hideaki Anno, the creator of the franchise, will be writing and overseeing a new animated short film. The film, titled “Evangelion 30th Anniversary Special Performance,” is about 13 minutes long and was created specifically for the festival. Naoyuki Asano, who directed the animation for “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” will direct this short. Several other key figures from the Evangelion series, including Kazuya Tsurumaki, Shinji Higuchi, and Ikki Todoroki, are also serving as supervisors. The short will have its world premiere at the festival and will only be shown once each day.
Get In The Robot Again

If you’re in Japan, or plan to visit for the big Evangelion celebration, a special short film will be shown at the Yokohama Arena from February 21st to 23rd. While it’s not available online yet, fans around the world likely won’t have to wait long to see it. Earlier this year, Hideaki Anno mentioned a new Eva project was coming, and this Evangelion Broadcast 30th Anniversary Special Screening might be what he was talking about.
Recently, news about Evangelion has been frequent, both due to its approaching anniversary and the closure of Studio Gainax. Hideaki Anno, the creator of Evangelion, established a new studio called Khara and acquired the rights to the series after Gainax faced several difficulties and ultimately closed down. Anno explained what led to Gainax’s downfall. Despite the studio’s recent struggles, Studio Gainax’s significant impact on anime will always be remembered, and fans are glad that Evangelion wasn’t affected by the same fate as the studio that originally created it.
