Tim Burton has cast Eva Green—a frequent collaborator, having previously worked with him on Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children—as Aunt Ophelia in season three of Wednesday. Green will play Morticia Addams’s long-lost sister, Ophelia Frump. She told Netflix’s Tudum she’s excited to be part of the show’s “deliciously dark and witty world” and bring a unique, quirky energy to the Addams family.
Aunt Ophelia has been a character in almost every version of The Addams Family. She originally appeared in the comic strips as a blonde woman with flowers growing out of her head, appearing as if she were wearing a flower crown. In the 1960s television series, Ophelia was engaged to Gomez Addams, but he fell in love with Morticia after hearing her speak French – and surprisingly, this also cured his asthma! Ophelia didn’t mind, however, as she had already developed feelings for Cousin Itt.
Aunt Ophelia has been a mysterious presence in the story for a while now. Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) explains that Ophelia disappeared after her powers as a Raven got out of control. In a vision at the end of season two, Wednesday saw her grandmother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), holding Ophelia captive in a dungeon, and Ophelia was writing “Wednesday must die” on a wall – hinting at a tense, rather than heartwarming, reunion. According to co-showrunner Al Gough, Ophelia’s return will have a major impact on the family.
