Ethan Klein and other YouTubers file lawsuit against Apple over AI training practices

I was shocked to hear that three popular YouTubers are actually suing Apple! Apparently, Apple has been using their videos to teach its new AI without asking – which they say is totally illegal. It’s a pretty big deal, and I’m really curious to see how it all plays out. It feels like a really important case for creators and how their work is used with AI.

A lawsuit filed in federal court in California on April 3rd accuses Apple of breaking copyright law by secretly collecting millions of videos from YouTube. The people bringing the lawsuit claim Apple got around YouTube’s security measures to unfairly obtain copyrighted content for profit.

Apple developed its AI systems, like a program that creates videos from text, by using data collected from YouTube videos, according to documents filed with regulators.

The lawsuit was filed by the owners of several well-known YouTube channels, including h3h3Productions and The H3 Podcast with Ethan Klein, along with creators MrShortGame Golf and Golfholics. They allege that Apple intentionally bypassed security measures meant to stop people from mass-downloading videos.

Apple accused of bypassing YouTube protections to train AI

The main issue in this case revolves around YouTube’s control over its videos. Although people can watch videos online, YouTube uses technology to prevent them from being directly downloaded or copied in large amounts.

The lawsuit claims Apple intentionally worked around security measures by using sophisticated tools and systems to hide its activities. These included changing IP addresses and programs that could download entire video files.

The plaintiffs argue that Apple secretly gathered huge amounts of online content and used it to train its artificial intelligence systems, all without permission or payment. They highlight Apple’s own research, which mentions datasets built from millions of YouTube videos, as proof of this practice.

According to the legal document, Apple unfairly exploited creators by using their work to develop generative AI without providing compensation. The filing describes this as a deeply unfair and unacceptable practice.

The case is a class action lawsuit, meaning it represents a group of YouTube creators who believe their content was used without permission. Those bringing the lawsuit are asking for financial compensation and a court order to prevent Apple from using the content in the future.

As a fan, it really bothers me that Apple’s choices could be hurting artists and creators. It seems like they’re skipping over opportunities for creators to actually get paid for letting AI companies use their work to train these new systems, and it’s taking away the creators’ ability to control how their own content is used. It just doesn’t feel right that they’re losing out on potential income and control.

It’s not just Klein who’s saying Apple used videos to teach its AI – this has been happening for a while! I remember back in 2024, people were already calling out Apple for allegedly using videos from big creators like MKBHD, MrBeast, and PewDiePie without permission. It seems like this is a pattern with them.
