The New Zealand-based company, Black Mandala, has secured global rights for the distribution of “Traumnovelle,” a German-produced English adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella. This work previously inspired Stanley Kubrick’s famous film, “Eyes Wide Shut.
The neo-noir thriller directed by Florian Frerichs (“The Last Supper”) is one of Black Mandala’s most significant acquisitions yet. This movie features Nikolai Kinski, son of renowned German actor Klaus Kinski, and Laurine Price in the leading roles, alongside Detlev Buck, Nora Islei, Bruno Eyron, and Sharon Kovacs as supporting actors.
The movie centers around Jakob, a doctor, spouse, and thinker residing in Berlin, whose life is transformed as he embarks on a nocturnal adventure through the city. Through encounters with Berlin’s secretive erotic subculture and a puzzling masked opera event, he is compelled to grapple with questions about love and desire in a realm of deception and dusk.
The movie, titled “Produced by Warnuts Entertainment in partnership with Thomas Kretschmar Film, Gretchen Film, K-Motion and Studio Babelsberg,” was released in German cinemas on 60 screens. It’s reported that the budget for this production exceeded €1 million ($1.03 million). The distribution rights in Germany (except for theatrical) are still available. Additionally, all global rights for this film are also up for grabs as Black Mandala plans to highlight it as one of their key titles during the upcoming Berlin European Film Market (EFM).
As a captivated fan, I’d describe “Traumnovelle” as a genre fusion that blends comedy, eroticism, horror, and thriller elements. This sexually charged neo-noir tale immerses us in a dreamlike, fantastical world, yet it also challenges us to ponder moral depths. That’s Frerichs’ take on it.
Frerichs notes that we aim for our audience to feel enriched after viewing our movie. It should captivate them visually, stimulate their minds intellectually, and evoke strong emotions dramatically. We hope they will walk away feeling like they were part of something truly unique.
