As a film enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming erotic thriller “Night Stage.” Having traversed the globe to immerse myself in the diverse tapestry of cinematic artistry, I can confidently say that this film promises an exhilarating fusion of Brazilian flair and Western genre conventions.
In Berlin, the company M-Appeal has been assigned the global distribution rights for the erotic thriller “Night Stage.” This movie will make its international debut at the Berlinale’s Panorama section as the opening act.
Titled “Night Stage,” the newest cinematic offering from Brazilian filmmakers Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, narrates the clandestine romance between an ambitious actor and a prominent politician. Their shared fascination for engaging in sexual encounters in public locales becomes increasingly apparent as they inch closer to their aspiration of notoriety. The nearer they approach their desired level of fame, the stronger their inclination to jeopardize themselves grows.
The movie takes on the genre of an alluring suspense-drama, incorporating elements reminiscent of Brian De Palma and Paul Verhoeven’s works, yet infusing it with a distinctive Brazilian flavor. The main characters are played by Gabriel Faryas portraying Matias, and Cirillo Luna as Rafael.
Matzbacher and Reolon shared with EbMaster: “Our fascination has always been with universes that blend desire, danger, and tension. So, it felt organic for us to create an erotic thriller. However, this genre is predominantly heterosexual, and we aimed to challenge this norm by presenting a queer perspective. We wanted to merge the conventional aspects of the genre with themes close to us, such as illicit pleasure, privacy, and how capitalism suppresses our desires and actions.
For the third time, Matzembacher and Reolon are gracing the stage of Berlinale. Their debut film, “Seashore,” was showcased in Forum back in 2015. Since then, their second feature, “Hard Paint,” distributed globally by M-Appeal, made its premiere at Berlinale Panorama 2018. This film garnered the Teddy Award and CICAE jury prize at Berlinale, and went on to be a successful festival favorite worldwide. Now, they’re back with their third feature, “Night Stage.
Maren Kroymann, head of M-Appeal, expressed: “We’re delighted to carry on working with gifted directors Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, whose craft just keeps getting better. ‘Night Stage’ is an engaging and alluring thriller that delves into the sinister aspects of pursuing fame and fortune, artfully combining sexual intrigue with cinematic allusions.
The movie is created by Jessica Luz and Paola Wink, who are part of Brazil’s Vulcana Cinema, as well as Matzembacher and Reolon’s firm, Avante Filmes. It receives backing from FSA and Ancine.
