Eric Dane, known for his role as ‘McSteamy’ on Grey’s Anatomy, will appear in a medical drama again, but this time as a patient. In the November 24th episode of NBC’s Brilliant Minds, he plays Matthew, a 9/11 firefighter battling ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This is Dane’s first television role since publicly sharing his own diagnosis with the neurodegenerative disease in April. The episode focuses on Matthew’s difficult conversation with his ex-wife and daughter about his condition. According to the show’s creator, Michael Grassi, the cast and crew were deeply moved by Dane’s performance in a scene where his character discusses learning to ask for help, giving him a ten-minute standing ovation. Grassi praised Dane’s courage in sharing his personal story, emphasizing its importance in raising awareness and reminding others they are not alone.
Actor Dane, who recently filmed an episode of Brilliant Minds and will appear in the upcoming season of Euphoria, is working with the organization I Am ALS to speed up research for ALS, improve access to care, and secure $1 billion in federal funding. He revealed to Diane Sawyer in June that ALS has caused him to lose all movement in his right arm. The 53-year-old actor shared that he’s frustrated with his diagnosis, especially because he wants to see his two teenage daughters graduate college and beyond. In a September meeting with California representative Eric Swalwell, he stated he’s determined to fight the disease for as long as possible, hoping to be present for all of life’s important moments for his daughters.
