Now that the 2025 Emmys are over, let’s take a look at the biggest surprises and disappointments – who and what didn’t get the recognition they deserved.
Wow, The Studio and Adolescence totally dominated the 2025 Emmys! I was so excited to see The Studio win six awards – they really deserved it. And Adolescence wasn’t far behind with four wins, which is amazing too. Both shows were definitely the big highlights of the night, in my opinion!
Brad Pitt also earned three Emmys, and our top show of the year so far, Severance, took home two.
The 2025 Emmy winners have been announced, and we’ve already covered the nominations that surprised people. Here are a few more unexpected moments from the awards show.
The Bear won nothing
The show ‘The Bear’ always sparks debate at the Emmys. It’s consistently nominated as a comedy, but many people wonder if it would be a better fit in the drama category.
We thoroughly enjoyed Season 3 of The Bear. In our review, we called it a fantastic blend of heartfelt emotion and intense kitchen drama, saying it will make you laugh, cry, and feel completely captivated – and wanting to see more.
But Emmys voters thought differently, with The Bear departing empty-handed.
Kathy Bates in Matlock lost to Britt Lower in Severance
Kathy Bates was the clear frontrunner to win the ‘Best Actress in a Drama’ award due to her performance in the popular revival of ‘Matlock.’ Beyond her strong acting, many believed she was overdue for recognition, as noted by The Guardian.
The competition for Best Lead Actress is heavily influenced by the stories behind the nominees. At 77, Kathy Bates is the oldest actress to receive an Emmy nomination for her role in *Matlock*. She came out of retirement to play a lawyer who takes on a case after her daughter tragically dies from opioid use.
Despite a strong showing, Bates lost to Britt Lower, who delivered a truly outstanding performance in Severance. Lower may have had an edge, though, as she played two distinct characters: Helena Egan and Helly R.
The White Lotus snubbed
In 2025, The White Lotus really captured everyone’s attention. It wasn’t just the show itself – the writing, acting, and directing were all top-notch – but also some interesting off-screen conflicts among the cast that had people talking.
Despite high expectations, Season 3 didn’t win any Emmys in 2025. The award for ‘Best Drama Series’ went to The Pitt, beating out Lotus.
The talented women of *The White Lotus* – Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, and Aimee Lou Wood – were all nominated for the same supporting actress award, but ultimately lost to Katherine LaNasa from *The Pitt*.
Tramell Tillman made history
Honestly, I wasn’t surprised Tramell Tillman took the win – he was amazing! But the competition was *tough*. Guys like Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell from ‘The White Lotus’ were all incredible, and even his ‘Severance’ co-stars, Zach Cherry and John Turturro, were in the running. It was a really strong field, but Tramell definitely deserved it.
What made this win so remarkable was that Tillman was the first African American to win in this category in the ceremony’s 77-year run.
Speaking with Variety last month, Tillman said he wasn’t stressed about taking on the role, but felt honored to follow in the footsteps of such talented creators. While he’s eager to win an Emmy, he understands that ultimately, it’s out of his control.
No one thanked Sal Saperstein

In an episode of ‘The Studio’ focusing on The Golden Globes, a recurring gag involves award winners repeatedly thanking executive Sal Saperstein (played by Ike Barinholtz), which frustrates his boss, Matt Remick (Seth Rogen).
After studios playfully honored TV characters at last week’s technical Emmy awards, many expected them to do the same at last night’s ceremony.
Ultimately, the joke didn’t make the cut. Seth Rogen explained to reporters that he felt it was strange to bring attention to a joke they’d already made themselves. This meant Sal Saperstein became the subject of what many considered the most unexpected omission of the night.
