Emmy Winners Nearly Cost the Boys & Girls Clubs $100,000

Nobody likes it when awards shows drag on, and acceptance speeches are usually the biggest reason why. People spend years dreaming of winning, and when they do, they want to thank everyone who helped them – their family, mentors, agents, and even their pets! It’s understandable, but it quickly adds up and makes the show run much longer than expected. Just thinking about all the people they might mention shows how easily those speeches can go on and on.

To make the Emmys more lively and get people talking, host Nate Bargatze started a fun game throughout the show. He began by announcing a $100,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but there was a twist!

Each Emmy winner had 45 seconds to deliver their acceptance speech, and they could thank anyone they chose. However, for every second a speech ran shorter than 45 seconds, Nate Bargatze pledged to donate an extra $1,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs. For example, a 40-second speech meant a $5,000 donation – which was great for the kids!

There was a tricky downside, too. For each second a contestant went over 45 seconds, Bargatze would take away $1,000.

The main focus of the night wasn’t whether *The Studio* would sweep the awards (and it almost did) or if anyone could prevent *Adolescence* from winning all its categories (they couldn’t). Everyone was really watching the donation total. It climbed as high as $106,000, which was fantastic! But then it dropped all the way to -$26,000. Stephen Colbert spoke at length after winning Best Talk Series – and understandably so, considering CBS had canceled his Emmy-winning show.

Bargatze didn’t reveal the final fundraising amount because it was surprisingly low. Instead of making the Boys & Girls Clubs of America pay a large sum to cover the bet, CBS and Bargatze decided to donate a total of $350,000 to the organization directly.

It’s great that the Emmys and Nate Bargatze helped raise money for a worthy cause and added some fun to the show. It’s a shame some winners gave overly long acceptance speeches, which could have meant even more donations for the kids who benefit from this charity. But, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
