As a film enthusiast, I’d like to propose a new rule we could call the “Queen Elizabeth Rule.” You see, the Television Academy has made some adjustments to the Emmy Awards rules, and one of these changes is going to shake things up in the guest performer categories.

In today’s era of premium TV shows, it’s increasingly frequent that actors take on major roles for a number of years, only to later exit the series. However, they typically return for brief cameos during future seasons.

Claire Foy garnered recognition as she was awarded the lead drama actress Emmy in 2018 for “The Crown.” However, she departed the series following two seasons, with her character, Queen Elizabeth, being passed on to Olivia Colman and later Imelda Staunton. Despite this departure, Foy returned to the show in flashback scenes as a younger Elizabeth, earning an Emmy nomination for guest drama actress in 2021, which she successfully won, and another nomination in that category in 2024.

In 2017, when I was a regular cast member on “This Is Us,” I was nominated for the supporting drama actor category. However, when I transitioned to a recurring role, I found myself nominated in the guest drama actor category in 2018, 2019, and 2020. (I was fortunate enough to win in both 2018 and 2020.)

If an actor has been nominated or won an award in either the leading or supporting actor category at the Emmys, they will not be eligible to submit for a guest actor category in future years if they reprise their same character role in the same series. However, they can still submit for the lead or supporting categories.

The adjustment will be implemented by the time of the 77th Emmy Awards competition in 2025. This year also brings a modification to the directing races, allowing an individual or team to submit multiple accomplishments within a category if these achievements are for different programs. Previously, directors were only permitted to submit one entry per category according to the Academy.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled about this update: Now, directors can submit one episode from every series they’ve masterfully crafted for consideration in our esteemed awards.

Also on tap are several changes that will be implemented for the 78th Emmys in 2026.

To simplify the number of reality shows that can be nominated for Emmys, the following titles will become eligible for Emmy nominations starting from the 2026 Emmy awards:

  • Casting By
  • Executive in Charge of Casting
  • Supervising Casting Director
  • Supervising Casting Producer
  • Senior Casting Director
  • Casting Director
  • Senior Casting Producer
  • Casting Producer
  • Celebrity Casting By

To be eligible for the 2026 Emmy Awards in the category of main title theme, at least half of the submitted episodes must feature a distinctive and recognizable musical motif that serves as the show’s signature. This unique piece should capture the essence of the series, enticing viewers by establishing its mood and previewing its content.
