Be warned – this contains spoilers for Dark Winds season 4, episode 4! Emma has taken on a new job in the latest installment of Dark Winds.
Deanna Allison, who plays Emma on Dark Winds, has revealed details about her character’s new job in Los Angeles and how it will be shown in the fourth season. Emma isn’t initially present in season 4, as she left Joe at the end of the previous season. However, she returns in episode 4, now working at a hospital in Los Angeles.
Allison spoke with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about what Emma’s new job in season 4 of Dark Winds means for her character. She explained that, following the events of season 3, Emma is now in a place where she feels she needs to be, and that her new work gives her a strong sense of purpose.
ScreenRant noted your absence at the start of this season and asked what it was like returning in episode four, especially since your character is now working in a Los Angeles hospital – a completely new setting for you. They wanted to know how it felt to be back on set in this different context.
I really loved the clinic in Los Angeles. It felt exactly right for Emma – like she was meant to be there. There were other nurses from the area, and the whole place had a great energy, almost like it had come back to life. They even had these amazing, retro flowers that gave off a ’70s vibe. It truly felt like her clinic, her home. The atmosphere was vibrant, and she was excited to help the people in Los Angeles who need it most. Because I have family there, I understand how empowering it must have been for her to move there and continue her work in a new city and with a new community.
The third season of Dark Winds concluded with Emma and Joe drifting apart, largely due to the lingering pain from the loss of their son earlier in the series. Their current investigation has taken Joe and his colleagues to Los Angeles, unexpectedly bringing him face-to-face with his estranged wife after a difficult separation.
Throughout the episode, it’s evident Emma thrives when she’s away from the main group in Dark Winds, enjoying her work and feeling valued in Los Angeles. Allison points out that Emma feels genuinely appreciated for what she does. Despite the distance, Emma also suggests there’s a chance she and Joe could repair their relationship.
While the main focus of this Dark Winds episode is the ongoing investigation, the show also emphasizes the importance of its characters’ personal journeys. For Emma, this involves working through issues with her husband and realizing she’s found a sense of belonging somewhere far from home.
Whether these characters will eventually make amends remains to be seen. Fortunately, AMC has already renewed Dark Winds for a fifth season, with new episodes expected in 2027. This gives the show plenty of time to explore the complexities of the Leaphorn’s relationship and fully explain the significance of Emma’s decision, both within the current case and in future storylines.
As a fan, I’m really glad to see how happy Bernadette Manuel has been with her role on Dark Winds. It opens up so many possibilities for her character, especially now that she and Joe are starting to connect more. Honestly, Emma’s storyline feels like one of the most exciting parts of season four – it’s not just about her personal journey, but also how it weaves into the bigger story that’s been building over the seasons.
New episodes of Dark Winds season 4 air Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
