As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that Emio – The Smiling Man has left an indelible mark on me. It’s not often that a game manages to keep me guessing right up until the very end, and the way this mystery unfolds is nothing short of masterful.
The slow-burn detective story genre isn’t new to me, but the pacing in Emio was exceptional, making every clue feel like a piece of a grand puzzle. The atmosphere was chilling, the music haunting, and the suspense palpable. I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly devouring every new lead and revelation.
The twist with the construction workers was a brilliant move, turning the investigation upside down in a way that left me reeling. The final chapter was a nerve-wracking journey through the mountains, filled with tension and dread. It’s not every day you find yourself navigating an eerie forest, desperate for answers while keeping one eye over your shoulder for the elusive Smiling Man.
The game’s climax was intense, and the epilogue was a gut-wrenching conclusion that tied up all the loose ends in a way that was both satisfying and heartrending. I can confidently say that Emio – The Smiling Man is one of the best games I’ve played this year, and it will stay with me for years to come.
Oh, and let me tell you about the time I was playing Silent Hill 2 and my cat jumped onto my keyboard just as I was entering the town of Silent Hill… talk about a jump scare!
It came as a shock when Nintendo revealed an eerie teaser about a character called “Emio” earlier this year, especially since it hinted at a fresh installment in their seldom-touched Famicom Detective Club series. However, considering how gripping the game ultimately turned out to be, with its suspenseful plot, fitting music, and chilling atmosphere building up to one of Nintendo’s most nerve-wracking conclusions yet, it’s hardly a surprise that they managed to create such an enthralling experience.
Spoilers for Emio – The Smiling Man follow.
Preparing for this dramatic conclusion isn’t simple or direct at all. Similar to the previous two installments in the Famicom Detective Club series, “Emio – The Smiling Man” is a gradual, intricate detective tale. It’s a mystery that unfolds thoughtfully, taking approximately twelve hours to fully unravel. This latest case finds the Utsugi Detective Agency stepping in to help detectives Junko Kuze and Daisuke Kamihara solve the mysterious death of a teenage boy. He was found wearing an ominous paper bag adorned with a smiley face.
What’s striking about this situation is its unsettling similarity to a string of unsolved murders from 18 years ago in the same town. This has prompted you and the police to entertain the possibility that the same perpetrator could be involved. The only other clue to pursue is a chilling urban tale of a serial killer, Emio, nicknamed “The Smiling Man.” This figure is said to don a paper bag, approaching weeping girls at night and strangling them, leaving behind a paper bag smiley face as a macabre keepsake.
Starting from a thin thread of evidence, you launch a complex inquiry filled with twists and turns, following a trail deliberately strewn with hints, red herrings, and blind alleys. Despite your advancements, the solution consistently eludes you. Each new piece of information you unearth only fuels more doubts, and it often seems that you’re no closer to unraveling the link between these cases, nor identifying the perpetrator or locating them.
Until you get to the second-last chapter, after an anxious car journey with Detective Kamihara, you head back to the city center to question locals for any additional leads. Following a mostly unsuccessful search throughout town, you eventually come across two ordinary construction workers who dramatically alter your perspective on the case.

During our subsequent discussion, you show the workers two distinct sketches: one depicts Minoru Tsuzuki, a person linked to the string of murders who has vanished for eighteen years; the other portrays Makoto Kuze, Detective Kuze’s missing brother, also lost around the same time as the murder spree. The construction workers assert they have just met a man named Minoru Tsuzuki, yet neither can recognize the likeness of the man in the police sketch. Instead, they both mistakenly identify the Makoto sketch as that of Minoru.
Intriguingly, the construction workers remember giving Minoru a ride home on the final day of their project. The background music mysteriously stops when they begin to describe leaving Minoru in the middle of nowhere at the foot of the mountains, and then watching the peculiar man silently make his way through the undergrowth towards the mountainside. This unexpected turn adds an eerie element, intensified by the haunting tune that underscores their account, suggesting you’re on the brink of a shocking secret.
As you move into the last chapter, the suspense intensifies when you reach Yamanba Pass, a spooky mountain road where Minoru was last spotted. The environment is unsettling from the start, with tangled undergrowth and decaying asphalt suggesting no one’s been here for a while. The only sound is the distant, ghostly whispers of wind rustling through the trees. With nightfall fast approaching and no other options, you’re left with no choice but to venture into the forest and follow up on your latest clue.
Climbing the mountain is oppressively ominous. As twilight settles in and you persistently advance, scrutinizing the dense vegetation for hints about your path, you encounter numerous trail junctions, most of which either loop back to a prior location or terminate at a standstill. It’s nerve-wracking and disorienting, and the eerie background music that accompanies your journey through this seemingly endless woodland intensifies the sense of apprehension.
However, what makes this scene intensely frightening is how skillfully the game plays with our assumptions. Although we, as spectators, know that various characters have encountered the Smiling Man throughout the story, you, as the main character, haven’t met him yet. This suggests that your long-awaited encounter with the mysterious killer could occur at any instant while you’re trying to find your way through this dark and isolated mountain, creating a constant sense of impending doom.
The game’s final chapters are exceptionally well-crafted, creating an undeniably tense atmosphere. This is further emphasized by the powerful epilogue that unfolds post-credits, neatly wrapping up all remaining plot threads and questions in a heart-wrenching way. Despite not receiving as much mainstream acclaim as other games, the climactic scenes of Emio – The Smiling Man make it one of the most emotionally impactful titles of the year. It’s a deeply moving, funny, and touching story that I won’t forget anytime soon.
