xAI has introduced Grokipedia, an encyclopedia connected to its Grok AI. It’s designed like a simplified version of Wikipedia, focusing on search functionality.
Grokipedia displays information in a similar format to Wikipedia, with clear sections and sources cited. While some entries have a Grok-generated ‘fact check’ date, users currently can’t contribute edits or suggest corrections.
The Verge has found that a number of articles seem to have been copied directly from Wikipedia, with some being nearly word-for-word copies of existing entries.
Pages show identical wording to Wikipedia
Grokipedia shows a message on pages about topics like the MacBook Air, PlayStation 5, and Lincoln Mark VIII stating that the content comes from Wikipedia and is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 License. In fact, the text on these pages is copied directly from Wikipedia, word for word.
The Wikimedia Foundation has recognized the reliance of even AI models like Grokipedia on Wikipedia. “Grokipedia, like many others, depends on Wikipedia for its information,” said spokesperson Lauren Dickinson to The Verge.

This isn’t the first time Grok has shown results from Wikipedia. Back in September, Elon Musk said xAI was working to correct this and expected to have a fix by the end of the year, after a user brought it to their attention.
Grokipedia doesn’t simply copy information from Wikipedia. While both cover topics like climate change, Grokipedia presents a critical view of established scientific findings and implies that the media often exaggerates concerns.
Most scientific organizations agree that the Earth’s climate is warming because of things people are doing. Grokipedia, a website similar to Wikipedia, currently has over 885,000 articles, while Wikipedia has about 7 million English pages.
