Elon Musk, the well-known billionaire, recently announced that his xAI game studio aims to release a high-quality, AI-powered game by the end of 2026. This claim quickly drew criticism from people working in the gaming industry, including Michael Douse, a publishing director at Larian Studios – the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 – who strongly questioned Musk’s ambitious plan.
According to Douse, the games industry doesn’t need more games designed through complex formulas and psychological manipulation. What it really needs are more immersive and engaging worlds. While AI can be helpful, we already have plenty of tools; the real issue is a lack of strong leadership and clear creative vision. AI won’t fix the core problem – the industry needs better direction.
Douse continued by saying that genuine connection with players is crucial for success. He believes the best creators are those who understand and build for *people*. He also criticized the tech industry, pointing out how many companies are now driven solely by profit and venture capital, rather than quality. Douse emphasized that games need a human element – a unique skill and emotional connection – to truly resonate with players. Removing that human touch, he argues, is why so many games fail to connect.
Douse’s statements are similar to what Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke said at The Game Awards last year. Vincke explained that the key to a successful game is actually quite simple, but developers often seem to forget this.
It’s unclear if the game being developed by xAI will actually become a reality. Elon Musk has a pattern of making ambitious promises that he doesn’t fully keep, as seen with projects like the Hyperloop, fully self-driving cars, and his goal of sending people to Mars by 2024.
As for Larian, the studio’s next project–codenamed Excalibur– is currently in development.
