Elon Musk believes AI will make a “whole video game” by 2029

Elon Musk recently predicted that artificial intelligence could be capable of independently creating complete video games within just a few years. He shared this forecast while appearing on the Rushmore podcast on X, hosted by Ari Emanuel and Ben Persky.

Elon Musk estimates that AI could completely create video games within about three years, rather than simply helping developers with the process.

He made these remarks during a podcast conversation about video games, alongside former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.

Fully AI games still a ways off

Musk thinks AI will eventually be able to create full video games on its own. However, because games require player interaction, he predicts the first AI-generated game won’t be available until around 2029.

I’ve been following the buzz around AI lately, and it’s really taking off in game development! It’s cool to see studios like Embark, the team behind Arc Raiders, actually using it. They used AI to create some of the voice lines in their game – things like quick pings and dialogue for characters who aren’t super important to the story. It just shows how much potential there is!

During the podcast, Bobby Kotick also complimented Elon Musk, stating he believed Musk would be an excellent owner of any gaming company and that no one is better suited to lead and grow one.

Kotick also stated that Musk’s ownership of X would be beneficial for everyone, not just gamers.

During the conversation, Elon Musk shared his favorite video games, calling Quake, Half-Life 2, BioShock, and the original Deus Ex his top four. Even though he complimented Diablo IV on the podcast, it didn’t make his personal list.
