Elizabeth Banks’ new science fiction series is currently the most popular show on Peacock in the U.S., based on data from FlixPatrol. The show features Banks and Matthew Macfadyen, known for his role in Succession.
Inspired by a story from Manuel Gonzalez, the film The Miniature Wife features Banks and Macfadyen as Lindy and Les Littlejohn, a couple locked in a power struggle. Their dynamic takes a bizarre turn when an accident causes Lindy to shrink down to just six inches tall.
The Miniature Wife Debuted Strongly With Critics
The film initially received very positive feedback, with 82% of critics giving it a thumbs up. While that number has decreased to 71%, it’s still considered a positive rating overall. Reviewers have described The Miniature Wife as both enjoyable and unsettling, and have highlighted its clever exploration of marriage. One critic even compared it to the classic film Flubber, but with much stronger language.
ScreenRant gave the series a positive review, calling it “laugh-out-loud funny” and praising its talented cast. They noted the show takes a simple concept and transforms it into something energetic and enjoyable. While it remains to be seen if it will maintain its perfect rating with more reviews, the series seems very promising.
A review on RogerEbert.com notes that we’re currently seeing a lot of psychological thrillers starring women, and while The Miniature Wife is labeled a dramedy, it follows a similar pattern. The reviewer sees this as a positive, adding that they especially appreciate a story’s underlying message and themes, not just what happens in the plot.
What Is The Miniature Wife About?
In the novel The Miniature Wife, scientist Les shrinks his wife, Lindy, during an experiment gone wrong. He assures her he can reverse it quickly, but as time passes, Lindy suspects this isn’t just an accident—it’s a deliberate attempt to control her. Confined to a dollhouse and relying on her intelligence, she starts to rebel. What begins as a troubled marriage quickly escalates into a fierce and unsettling struggle for power and freedom.
Alongside Banks and Macfadyen, The Miniature Wife features a talented cast including Ronny Chieng (known from The Daily Show and Crazy Rich Asians), Zoe Lister-Jones (New Girl, Life In Pieces, Friends with Better Lives), Sofia Rosinsky (Paper Girls, Death and Other Details), O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale, Presumed Innocent), Sian Clifford (Fleabag, The Ballad of Wallis Island), Aasif Mandvi (Evil, The Daily Show), Rong Fu (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Hello (Again)), and Tricia Black (Small Achievable Goals, Pretty Hard Cases). The series was created by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner and all episodes were released on April 9th.
Peacock has recently released a number of new shows, including The Miniature Wife. Other new titles are the spy thrillers The Copenhagen Test and Ponies, as well as The Paper, a spin-off of The Office. All episodes of The Miniature Wife are currently available to stream.
