As a seasoned Elder Scrolls Online gamer, I must say that the upcoming changes to the game’s content roadmap have me both excited and a bit apprehensive. On one hand, the shift towards smaller, more frequent seasonal updates sounds promising – it means more regular content drops and less waiting time between major expansions. However, as someone who has spent countless hours exploring the vast zones introduced in previous Chapters, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic for the grandeur of those expansions.
In the coming year, The Elder Scrolls Online is set to undergo significant modifications in its content plan. The developer, ZeniMax Online, has revealed that they will be moving away from their current annual Chapter model and instead opting for smaller, more frequent seasonal updates starting in 2025.
In a recent blog post, Matt Firor, director at ZeniMax Online Studios, shared the reasons behind their decision to mix things up a bit. Since 2017, they have been releasing new chapters (similar to expansions) for Elder Scrolls Online every year, including this year’s Gold Road chapter. This model has proven to be extremely successful, as it introduced fresh zones, quests, dungeons, and followers, among other things. Typically, these updates were released in June, with the studio’s schedule heavily dependent on these major content drops. However, due to the strict release schedule, there was limited room for creative experimentation.

In the future, ESO will switch to a system where updates are rolled out in seasons, ranging from three to six months long. These seasons will bring fresh storylines, dungeons, and events for players to enjoy. Firor mentioned that next year will serve as a “transition year” for the team, meaning some of their larger updates may still be released concurrently with the game’s new seasonal content.
According to Firor, no longer being confined to a rigid annual release schedule allows our development team to deploy content as it becomes available all year round, instead of focusing on a specific date in June. This flexibility enables us to concentrate on a broader range of content throughout the year.
Zeni, the lead developer, emphasized that even though the team is shifting their focus away from large, new chapters and won’t primarily concentrate on creating massive new zones, they’re still planning to deliver fresh story content and sporadic new zones. However, bigger zones will be rolled out in various content updates, according to Zeni. Moreover, narratives set in earlier zones will be continued, and there will also be stories centered around the Elder Scrolls factions such as the Dark Brotherhood, Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, and Thieves Guild. For players eagerly awaiting a new ESO zone, it seems there’ll likely be one launched next year, but Zeni mentioned that we’ll have to wait until April for further details about how this upcoming zone will differ from previous additions.
According to Firor, there’s been a strong request from the gaming community for ZeniMax Online to explore new content ideas. By 2025, some of these experiments should bear fruit, with enhancements such as:
Moreover, Firor mentioned that ZeniMax Online is planning to prioritize enhancing the gameplay experience for both new and returning players. This will include revamping the initial game zones with fresh visuals, optimizing the user interface, and implementing adjustments to facilitate a smoother transition for veterans re-entering the game.
Recently, ZeniMax Online Studios decided to form a union, and their parent company, Microsoft, has agreed to acknowledge this union voluntarily. Now, ZeniMax Online Studios joins other unions already present at ZeniMax, such as Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Quality Assurance workers. All three of these unions have come together under the Communication Workers of America (CWA). Microsoft has a policy that supports unionization, meaning they won’t interfere with union activities within their company, as per their agreement with the CWA.
