FromSoftware has pushed back the release of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition to 2026. Although fans with the new Nintendo Switch 2 might be disappointed, the delay isn’t unexpected. Reports suggested the game was having trouble running smoothly.
Earlier this year, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition was revealed for the Nintendo Switch 2, with a planned release in 2025. This version includes the complete Elden Ring game, plus the “Shadow of the Erdtree” expansion, offering players new armor, weapons, and ways to customize their mount, Torrent. It also adds two new character classes: Knight of Ides and Heavy Knight. Good news for players on other consoles – this new content will also be released for those platforms after the Switch 2 launch.
When will Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Be Released?
- Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will now be released in 2026.
The release of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition has been moved to 2026. FromSoftware stated the delay is to improve the game’s performance. Those following the game’s development weren’t entirely surprised, as early gameplay demos at Gamescom showed significant performance problems on the Switch 2, sometimes dropping to just 15 frames per second during busy scenes. The performance was reportedly so poor that Bandai Namco didn’t allow anyone at Gamescom to record footage of the game.
Switch 2 owners are excited for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, but some fans are already disappointed. When the game was announced, it became clear the physical copy would be released as a Game-Key Card. These cards for the Nintendo Switch 2 have proven controversial because they aren’t traditional physical games – they simply require an extra step to access a digital download.
Even with some challenges, the upcoming release of Elden Ring on Nintendo’s console, along with the new content, will undoubtedly excite many fans. Since launching in 2022, Elden Ring has become one of the best-selling and most popular open-world RPGs of all time, with over 30 million copies sold. Hopefully, FromSoftware will carefully develop the Switch 2 version to deliver a fantastic experience for everyone – both longtime players eager to revisit the Lands Between and new players discovering the game’s world.
