Ever since Elden Ring Nightreign was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, there hasn’t been much news about the upcoming multiplayer co-op action survival game or its Network Test. However, a recent interview with IGN Japan has shed light on one feature that won’t be part of the game. Elden Ring Nightreign’s game director, Junya Ishizaki, discussed this in a recent interview, and they confirmed the absence of a popular feature while explaining why it won’t be included.
After the launch of Elden Ring in 2022, its in-game messaging system gained immense popularity among the Soulsborne community and newcomers, sparking numerous discussions about the humorous messages left by players. Famous messages that turned into memes across the Soulsborne and gaming communities include the well-known “‘Pull finger, but hole,’ ‘dog,’” and “‘Try jumping,’,”, which have since received significant attention in the ensuing months. However, following the announcement of Elden Ring: Nightreign, players have been curious if the in-game messaging feature will be incorporated into the game.
During an interview with IGN Japan, Ishizaki clarified that the message system found in Elden Ring will not appear in Nightreign. This decision might disappoint certain players, but a rationale for its absence was given. Ishizaki explained that the typical “three-day session” in Nightreign could last about 40 minutes, leaving insufficient time to incorporate a message system.
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN” Director Interview
– The game compresses the rich flavor of an RPG into approximately 40 minutes through cooperative play by three players.
– It also touches upon story elements.
– The game does not have settings to simplify gameplay. This is because From Software trusts its players.— IGN Japan (@IGNJapan) January 3, 2025
Ishizaki explained that while you can still perceive the spectral presence of other players, the functionality to exchange messages has been taken away. The rationale behind this decision is that in this game, with sessions typically lasting around 40 minutes, there simply isn’t enough time for players to compose their own messages or read messages written by others due to the limited time frame.
Concerning the creation of the game’s idea, Ishizaki shared that the “three-day session” is a concept aimed at developing a compact Role Playing Game (RPG) where players encounter both victories and defeats. He believes that the most captivating aspect of RPGs lies in the variety of experiences they offer, which culminate in a satisfying conclusion. To ensure a harmonious gameplay experience that truly embodies the spirit of RPGs, each game lasts for three days.
Ishizaki affirms that the realm of Elden Ring: Nightreign is a separate version of the Elden Ring world, yet both games align in their shared perspective during the time before the “Fracture War.” This approach allows for a fresh narrative to unfold from eight distinct characters, each embarking on individual quests that can be uncovered at the game’s core, as well as through other engaging features and the enigmatic “Hidden Round Table.
In the interview, Ishizaki confirmed that the mechanic of using Ashes will be present in Nightreign, but it will operate distinctly compared to its role in Elden Ring. They explained this difference because one of the eight playable characters is primarily an ash-wielding combatant in Nightreign.
