Taking place a century before the events of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tells the story of Prince Aegon V Targaryen, nicknamed Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell), and his adventures.
This is a gentler story about a young man’s growth, focusing on his time with Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey). While it may appear disconnected from the original Game of Thrones aside from a few recognizable family names, this young prince is ultimately the reason the original series happened – for better or worse.
How Egg connects to Game of Thrones
Aerys II, Daenerys’ father and known as the Mad King, is the son of Egg. His harsh and oppressive reign over Westeros sparked Robert’s Rebellion, setting in motion all the major events in Game of Thrones that take place south of the Wall. But his influence extends beyond just those events.

Maester Aemon’s final words, spoken before his death in Season 5, were, “Egg, I dreamed that I was old.” This ‘Egg’ is the same character featured in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ and is actually Aemon’s younger brother, who also gave him that nickname.
After King Maekar I passed away, Aemon was the rightful heir to the throne. However, he had already become a maester, meaning he’d given up all rights to land and any claim to rule.
Some lords, dismissing Egg as common due to his association with Dunk, attempted to free Aemon from his vows and make him king, but Aemon wouldn’t accept their offer.
Worried that someone might try to use him to overthrow his younger brother, he decided to join the Night’s Watch, effectively removing himself from political power. Decades later, in the first season of Game of Thrones, he encounters Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly, becoming a significant mentor to them.
We learned all of this back in season one, when Aemon shared his history with Jon. He explained that his father was Maekar, and after Maekar, his brother Aegon became king because Aemon had turned down the throne. Aegon’s son, Aerys – known as the Mad King – followed him as ruler.

Aemon’s devotion to his brother led him to join the Night’s Watch, which ultimately triggered a series of important events at Castle Black. These included the arrival of Stannis Baratheon, who came to help after receiving a specific message, and Jon Snow’s eventual rise to become Lord Commander.
Okay, so in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Egg is just a kid, but honestly, he ends up being a really huge deal in the whole Game of Thrones story – even if he doesn’t realize it himself!
