Unfortunately, we won’t see a sequel to *The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth*, and because EA no longer has the rights, the original game isn’t available to buy digitally. Despite this, dedicated fans are still working on improving the game. We’re covering it today because a new update for Edain, a popular and significant mod for this classic strategy game, has just been released.
What’s new in version 4.8.3 of the Edain mod?
The new release, numbered 4.8.3, brings plenty of additions.
- First and foremost, the mod has gained twenty new maps. Twelve of them are refreshed and improved versions of old fan-made projects, including variants for two, four, and six players. On top of that, there are seven maps built around a new type of building (semi-fortresses—strongholds that are open on one side) introduced in version 4.8.2. One new map has also been added to the Fortress category.
- AI-controlled forces can finally recruit Ents.
- Gameplay balance has also been improved, both in terms of the maps and the factions, and many technical issues have been fixed.
What is Edain and why is it worth installing?
Edain started as a modification aiming to recreate the game world more accurately based on the books and movies. The creators did this by adding new characters and skills, and by dividing the existing sides into distinct factions, each with unique units and functioning as a standalone army. They also included many new features, like the ability to equip heroes with the Rings and more detailed building options, such as constructing large castles.
As the game developed, the creators added a lot more content. This included new maps, a campaign inspired by The Hobbit, and a much larger and improved War of the Ring mode.
