Charlie Hunnam, the lead actor in Monster Season 3, thinks the show approaches the story of Ed Gein with genuine respect. However, not all viewers feel the same way.
Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ series has often sparked debate, first with its portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in Season 1, and then with its focus on the Menendez brothers in Season 2.
Season three delves into the disturbing crimes of Ed Gein, which famously influenced iconic horror films like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. However, the show has drawn criticism from some true crime enthusiasts who feel it overly dramatizes the killer’s story.
But Hunnam, who plays Gein, defends Monster for depicting him “honestly.”
Charlie Hunnam says Monster wasn’t trying to create “shock impact”
Charlie Hunnam, the British actor famous for his role as Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy, spoke out in support of the film Monster and its portrayal of Ed Gein.
He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he didn’t believe the show ever exaggerated anything or included unnecessary shocking moments. Everything was done with the goal of telling the story truthfully.
The show contains disturbing and explicit content, including scenes of Gein engaging in sexual acts with his mother’s clothing, committing murder, and desecrating graves.
Even though it’s been controversial, Charlie Hunnam thinks ‘Monster’ will spark conversation, and that increased attention will ultimately draw in more viewers.
He hopes the show will draw viewers because it’s sparking conversation and getting people to think. More importantly, he’s confident the show honestly explores what motivated the boy’s actions and the complexities of human nature.
Monster branded a “disgusting mistelling” of Ed Gein tale
People are definitely discussing the show on Netflix, but the feedback isn’t as enthusiastic as the star likely hopes.
Viewers strongly criticized the show, with one calling it fabricated and another describing it as a repulsive distortion of the truth. A third viewer objected to the show’s portrayal of the real-life figure it was based on, arguing it unfairly presented him as a sympathetic character.
I just watched “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” on Netflix, and I thought it was terrible. It wasn’t accurate and actually seemed to glorify the horrific violence involved. Ryan Murphy really needs to reconsider his approach to these kinds of stories.

As a big fan, I was really glad to hear Ian Brennan, one of the creators and a writer for Season 3, talk about the show. He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that a big goal is to avoid being exploitative, and that sometimes, *less* is more when you’re dealing with dark and disturbing stories. It’s cool to know they’re thinking about that!
“It’s important that you tell the whole story even with the parts that are hard to watch.”
