Echoes of Aincrad’s Death Game Mode will actually delete your save file when you die

Bandai Namco announced a new action RPG called Echoes of Aincrad, based on the popular online world from Sword Art Online. The game will be available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam) on July 10th. Players in Japan will be able to get the console versions a day earlier, on July 9th. The official Japanese website has more in-depth information about the game than the English press release.

The English announcement briefly mentioned that the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions of the game will let players access the Death Game Mode early. However, the Japanese announcement clarified that this mode features true permadeath – meaning if your character dies in the game, your save file will be permanently deleted, just like in the original light novels the game is based on. This happens the moment your character runs out of health and ‘collapses’.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when using this mode. Normally, Death Game Mode is unlocked only after completing the main story once, for players who bought the game through standard channels. Also, even though Echoes of Aincrad lets you have up to three save files, you can only activate Death Game Mode on your second and third save slots.

So, I was checking out the Japanese website for the game, and they’ve got a really detailed specs list. It basically confirms what I suspected – this isn’t an online game, it’s a single-player experience you play offline. Also, no HDR support, unfortunately. But the good news is they’ve laid out exactly what kind of resolution and frame rates we can expect on each platform, which is awesome!

  • PlayStation 5: 3840×2160 resolution, 60fps maximum frame rate
  • Xbox Series X: 3840×2160 resolution, 60fps maximum frame rate
  • Xbox Series S: 2560×1440 resolution, 60fps maximum frame rate
  • Steam (PC): Resolution ranging from 1280×720 to 3840×2160, unlimited maximum frame rate

Okay, so the upcoming Echoes of Aincrad update is going to be awesome for international players! Not only will we get full English and Japanese voiceovers, but subtitles will be available in a ton of languages – French, Italian, German, Spanish (both European and Latin American versions), Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, and both Traditional and Simplified Chinese. And get this – the new character, Iori, who you’ll be interacting with a lot, will be voiced by Kana Ichinose in the Japanese version. She’s super talented, so I’m really excited about that!

The Japanese trailer for Echoes of Aincrad is much more detailed than the English version. It aims to make it seem like the Sword Art Online game is real and exists in our world. You can watch it below.
