How do production chains work?

Okay, so if I click on any of the items I’ve unlocked down on the taskbar, the game shows me exactly how it’s made – the whole production chain. It’s cool because I can see all the stuff I need to gather and how it all gets processed. Then, if I click on any of those resources in the chain, it lets me place the building that actually makes it. Super helpful for figuring out what to build next!

You can create these materials yourself, get them through trade, or bring them in from other islands you control. Just remember to store these resources in your trading post or warehouses, and build more warehouses regularly to have enough space.

How to synchronize a production chain?

How quickly buildings work is a key part of the game. Each building produces resources at a different rate, meaning it takes varying amounts of time to create a ton of any given material. To build an efficient production line, you need to consider these processing times, ensuring buildings are always busy and no resources are wasted. For example, a basic setup with lumber and planks works best when you build the same number of lumberjack huts and sawmills – this way, they can keep up with each other perfectly.

More complex production chains involve items that take varying amounts of time to create. For instance, making one ton of garum requires one ton of mackerel and one ton of salt. It takes 30 seconds to collect a ton of salt, 60 seconds to catch a ton of mackerel, and 90 seconds to produce a ton of garum from those ingredients. To make this process as efficient as possible, you need to produce each resource every 30 seconds. This means building one saltworks, two mackerel sheds, and three garum factories. Dividing the 60-second mackerel production time by two buildings results in 30 seconds per building, and dividing the 90-second garum production time by three buildings also yields 30 seconds per building. Keep in mind the key principle: the longer something takes to produce, the more buildings you need to make it efficiently.
