Initially, there was confusion about Battlefield 6’s crossplay settings – some thought disabling crossplay on consoles would still pair PlayStation and Xbox players. However, EA has since confirmed that isn’t how it will work.
Crossplay was a great improvement for gaming, letting people play with friends regardless of what system they use. However, it also created some new problems.
Many console gamers believe PC players have an edge due to using a mouse and keyboard and achieving smoother gameplay with higher frame rates. However, cheating is often considered the most significant problem.
Because it’s simpler to cheat in PC games, console players are asking for a way to play only against other console users, reducing the risk of encountering cheaters.
After attending a preview event for Battlefield 6, EA explained how the game will handle crossplay.
There’s no console-only crossplay in Battlefield 6
If you’re playing on a console and enable crossplay, the game will primarily try to match you with other console players. However, players on all platforms are included, so you may occasionally play against PC players. PC players cannot turn crossplay off.
Turning off crossplay on consoles means you’ll only play against others using the same system – Xbox players with Xbox players, and PlayStation players with PlayStation players. It also prevents you from teaming up with or playing with friends on different platforms.
This contrasts with a statement made by Ripple Effect’s Matthew Nickerson in an IGN interview on September 12th. He explained that crossplay can be limited to consoles by disabling PC crossplay, ensuring console players aren’t matched with those on computers.
He initially stated that PlayStation and Xbox players could play together even with crossplay disabled, but that information has since proven to be incorrect.
Crossplay opens the possibility of being matched with PC players, which unfortunately means there’s always a risk of encountering cheaters. The developers have admitted they can’t completely eliminate cheating, but they’re actively and aggressively working to combat it, as they stated in a recent IGN interview.
